Reading so many posts from people on here who are just dismayed at the way football has gone in this country. It's a sad state of affairs alright, the English game is an absolute powerhouse, and in my opinion it needs proper government legislation, and I don't mean this so-called independent regulator. I'm talking proper protection under the national heritage act or something. We've never needed the lure of Champions League football to have a strong domestic competition, but the glory hunters and others who follow the so called big six are so obsessed with competing with the top European clubs that any mention of a levelling of the playing field, such as wage caps and whatnot are met with howls of 'well, we'll just lose all the best players to European teams?' Well, so what? Are the rest of us meant to care? Serie A used to get all the best players, the premier league was still a powerhouse.
I'd like to see this de facto super league kicked in to touch and/or domestic regulation that ensures all prem clubs recieve a portion of European tv revenue.
I'd like to see mandatory drug tests for all 25 squad players after every away game. Actually, reduce squad size to 23 whilst you're at it.
I'd like to see a spending cap of sorts. Wage caps are a legal nightmare, but strong governance could ensure that all clubs have to spend 20% of turnover on facilities and/or the immediate local community. This along with a cap on what agents can earn would ensure that the vast amounts of money that pours in doesn't just end up in the pockets of individuals, instead ensuring that the actual clubs themselves and the communities they're at the heart of are actually benefitting from the ever increasing amounts of cash that are thrown around.
I'd like to see refereees with a high IQ -preferrably doctors- paid £1 million+ per season to make decisions that can have massive finacial consequences. This system we have now where they all know each other from 14 and are planning for a job at the top on err, 70k per year (good money for your average joe but it's unlikely to attract the finest minds, especially seeing as they will only earn that if they actually make it to the prem.)
Bin the 5 sub rule, stop clubs being able to stockpile players, get proper refs and bin VAR. Ther could be finacial restrictions on squads, as in 75% of wages must be spent on 50% of the squad.
There's actually loads and loads of things that could be done and English football would still thrive, but nothing much will happen, we've already sleepwalked in to this crap version of VAR and a de facto super league.
