Spurs have been well run by their owners (ENIC?.) for years. It’s no coincidence that they’ve stopped being a mid table side any more is it?
For me I want clubs to be able to compete on their own means, not because the person who coughs them is richer than the person owning the club down the road.
We have suffered from this.
We have been denied many champions league qualifications by Chelsea and city.
We could have good owners and been well run and been around the top 4. As fans , that doesn’t seem fair. But now, we’re on the verge of bankruptcy.
But that horse has bolted.
5 or 6 clubs are now way ahead of the rest, with income streams to match. No one else can ‘compete’ in the short or medium terms on their own means.
Restricting spending may be the right thing to do - but is futile once some clubs have reaped the benefits and others can’t follow suit. As stated, the options are for every other club to live within their means and bob along, maybe hoping to get a 5th place finish in 20 years time if everything goes well,
or for a rich owner to spend big in the hope of getting there within 5 years (and then generating the income streams to sustain that kind of league position).
Oh, and Chelsea finished inside the top 6 each of the 7 years before Abramovich came along (with two FA cups and a league cup). They denied us nothing.
