Player Valuation: £30m
Although their ages may be in opposition to David Moyes' transfer policy, there are two potential signings that I think would be both astute and realistic for us right now: Juliano Belletti from Chelsea and Edmilson from Barcelona. Both will turn 32 this summer.

It looks like Belletti is out at Stamford Bridge, selected behind Essien at right back and now certain to be behind Bosingwa and Ferriera next season. Still, he's quick, strong, athletic and has definite quality. Although I expect other areas of the squad to be priority, the fact Hibbert will miss the entire pre-season means RB may be a frail area (and is already one I think needs improving). Plus, as a player no longer wanted by Chelsea, he shouldn't cost very much at all.

Edmilson, I think, would be ideal for defensive centre mid. He's tall, strong and comfortable on the ball. He was brilliant for Lyon and has been unlucky to be at Barca at a time when they've had a surplus of good central midfielders. He has over 40 caps for Brazil, is also accomplished at centre back and is out of contract this summer.

These two guys would offer us additional quality in two key areas for the next two seasons, without costing us much in transfer fees. They also seem to be good professionals that would benefit younger players like Gosling and Rodwell. Although I like Moyes' policy of investing in youth for long-term gains, the impact of shorter-term experience shouldn't be undervalued.

Not sure if DM would be interested, and not sure if their wages could be met, but I think they'd be two excellent signings. Just thinking out loud.....

I think the wages and length of contract would make it unlikely to happen.there now seems to be a policy of lowering the average age of the squad so again it looks doubtful ,but who knows what Dave is plotting

Thanks. I worked hard to ensure that took exactly one moment to read.

Yes, probably unlikely. Still, youth and promise over experience is an interesting question, especially when considering transfer fees. Pre-Abramovich, Chelsea turned themselves into a top 4 side by signing top players who were slightly past their prime. I don't think it's a good policy to adhere to exclusively, but if timed well it can be useful.

Chelsea Pre-Ambramovich were in a hell of a lot of debt. Probably because they signed players that were past it for quite a few bucks on big wages then when they got a few good years out of them they had no re-sale value.

"...not sure if their wages could be met". :o

Their wages would be unbelievably high. No chance. I'm surprised these exotic names keep popping up.

Look to relegated clubs. The lads at Reading - Kitson, Doyle, Harper, Shorey...they're our targets. I'd take Kelly out of Birmingham too.

I would be very surprised....

I know it might sound a case of beggars can't be choosers, but even so I'd have those four from Reading no problem. They'd beef up the squad and give us the strength in depth that we were supposed to have this season. I dont think we'll be breaking the club record again anytime soon. Hope I'm wrong on that like.

I have a strong dislike for Belleti after our Carling Cup games against them hes a real leave the boot in merchant and of the ball assasian.

He has just joined my Jens Lehman list of players i hate at other clubs!

Kitson, Doyle, Harper and Shorey would all be terrible buys. We have superior equivalent players here already. We need to bring in people who are better than what we already have.

You think Anichebe is better than Doyle, that Kitson is inferior to Phil Neville?

I'd like great players too, unfortunately we have owners who can't buy them.
