Well not quite, I get so much stick on here because I'm a cynic and don't subscribe to the thinking that we're world beaters because we are 4th after playing less than half the season (remarkably the same position we were in roughly around this time last year, what happened there!?) This whole thread was just to get an understanding of how the majority felt.

My own personal opinion is clear, we have improved and we should recognise that. If, and that is a massive IF, we maintain this form then absolutely we can challenge for those top four places. To think some people would look beyond that is remarkable to me, and clearly to many others on here, as there is just no genuine justification for it. It'd bonkers!

I just don't want to see us building the team up for a fall, we need to be realistic in our expectations here because the team is going through a massive transition right now in every aspect, new manager, new playing style, new younger players coming in and some of the experienced old guard will start to fall away. To do that with little money and make top four would be a miracle in itself.

Can I remind you that the RS finished below us last year, in fact the last 2 years, and haven't won the league in almost as long a time as us, so if they can talk of title challenges, we damn well can also.

Loving the optimism on here lads but it wasnt long ago we drew with palace Cardiff etc. We are one lukaku injury from playing jelavic. I think we have an outside chance of finishing top 3 but we are just as good for fourth as rs and I think more likely then utd or spurs. I would take 4th now but no way should we play for it,we should aim to win every match which would give us the league! Also, in no way do I think the rs have any chance of the title, and Chelsea city and others will spend in Jan I'm sure. I think that there are still problems to be addressed our squad is relatively thin and some players have consistency issues (barkley, mirallas, baines this year...)but there is a long way to go and Ive never felt this good about us in a long time!

The key for me is the next 3 games and where we sit after that.....to be in the new year with 3 wins I think we can finish top 3 simply by the positivity that would generate around the club (being in such a position)....

The way we play isn't percentage football any more and so as long as we stick to the current system (which we will) were not going to suddenly implode.

Also how many players in Jan would want to join us looking in from the outside if we did win the next 3 games ?

I would take 4th place right now. Weve got a squad that is playing very well but an injury here or there and i think we might stumble when the pressure really mounts.

Looking at the odds makers a few days ago I noticed we were a shorter price than Spurs to finish in the top 4, but the same price to finish in the top 6. Which indicates to me that maybe we are in a situation where our ceiling is higher than some but our floor could be lower.

So based on this poll, roughly 1 in 4 of our fans would not accept 4th place were it offered at this stage.

Interesting. Results like today, while they do still happen to other sides occasionally, certainly make you reassess these things.

Never settle for anything less than 1st, if that's unachievable then we want to finish in the highest position possible. 38games lad then we can talk.
