How will it get better next season? Surely it's downhill from here?

Out of all the loans its Barry that has impressed me the most. Lukaku and Deulofeu to me have been hit and miss. They look like they will be great players but at the moment we are only seeing small bits of them especially Deulofeu.
Troare hasn't been fit enough to pass judgement on and is basically out of the equation.

We need to buy a striker thats quite proven which costs money, I just hope we will have the money available for one.

I don't think it will be downhill from here on I actually believe we will get better.

I agree.

Where would we be without the loan signings this year?

The fact is we will likely be heading into the summer without any of them, with the exception of Barry possibly. That means we'll have to spend money (which we might not even have) to get back to the same level next season. That's if we spend well. I hope to God we're not going to be in a position whereby we are relying on Roberto to be pulling off excellent pieces of business in the form of loans every year to keep us competitive at the top end. It's pretty pathetic, not to mention very unsustainable. A lot of our key players do not have many more seasons in them at all either. I can only see this club heading one way, sadly. I'm looking at you, Bill.

We get overtaken everytime a club has both the money to blow us out of the water and the organisation to use that money competantly.

If you look at our history, after Kendall and the good times left we basically slumped for about 18 years (one season with Royle aside) until Moyes got our ship righted and we took our place as 'the best of the rest'.

From 2004-05 to 2008-09, we finished 5th twice, 6th one and 4th once. The Big 4 of Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool were mostly beyond us but we were ahead of everyone else (aside from spurs one time).

Then in 2009-10 we missteped slightly in spending the lescott money badly and dropped down to 8th. But the thing is that season we earned the same ammount of points as we had finishing 4th five years earlier.

The problem was less us and more that 3 big spending clubs in Villa, Spurs and City got their acts together and overtook us. And as hard we try we can't compete with well managed big spending clubs.

Then Villa's manager quit and they couldn't replace him properly and so they're no longer a threat but we haven't finished above either city or spurs since then.

That leaves us 7th. And we will remain about 7th unless either another club behind us gets citified or a club in front of us falls apart (see Liverpool spending 100m on carroll, downing and the like or Man U appointing Moyes).

Yes there are about 14 teams who spend more money on the team then we do. But only 6 spend like 3 times as much, the others who have comparable budgets to us simply aren't as well run as a football team, aren't as well managed, aren't as well coached, aren't as stable. Which is why only newcastle, out of those clubs, have overtaken us in nearly a decade.

So short of another club behind us spending City money, I think 7th is the least we can expect.

And since we have a good squad and a good manager and the rich teams occasionaly do make mistakes (see chelsea under avb, Man u appointing moyes, the rs under hodgson and kenny etc.) there's no reason to say we won't get a 6th, a 5th or a 4th whenever they do slip up. Obviously with 6 teams there instead of 4 it relies on more mistakes to get 4th but it does happen.

And more importantly the cups aren't dominated by the top teams in the same way so we have a good chance of becoming a good cup team and winning trophies again.

Do I have worries? Yes, martinez is still mostly untested in the transfer market and Villa have proven how bad a bad window can be if you sell your best players and replace them badly. And we do seem reliant on a loan market that might dry up and financially we're lagging behind and rely on a lot of other teams being terribly run which can't continue for ever.

But we have a good manager who has us playing good football, and will only get better the more this team is his and he can bring in his own players and some exciting young prospects who will only get better with age.

I think we will win a trophy in the next 5 years (if we don't, it'll be a huge letdown as we're good enough to win one and you have to score when you're on top, to let this generation of players pass with no trophy when the 95 lot won one would be a huge missed opportunity). And I also think we will get more points and finish higher in the league next year as compared to this.

Them two lads at Tranmere, Kennedy and another one called Matthew have been recalled from their loans today.

I honestly don't get why we haven't had significant interest from investors the way other clubs have.

Why some moneybag sheikh or oil tycoon would want to invest in City or Chelsea ahead of us baffles me no end.

Not that I'd want that kind of investor - praying for the day that Roman yanks his rubles out of the bridge and sends that lot down to league 2 - just someone that loves football and wants to restore a once-great club (to outside observers only, in here we are still great and always will be) to their former glory.

Thought with the Li Tie/Li Weifeng/Kejian/Chang connection that we might attract some Eastern investment that would enable us to at least push us into the top 6 spender bracket. But nothing.

If any club has shown a competance in using money, its us. Add that to our history and we should be fighting the offers off.

Nuts.

btw @Artetafan your entire post was great.

Look at the Boardroom thread and it may be clearer to you. In summary, BK and the board are asking too much money for their shares, we have a rundown stadium, hardly any assets and we have debts.

I agree with the sentiment about a how bad transfer window could really drop us in it

We need a striker though and I hope we get a good one when summer rolls around
