Which is true, not just to here, or football - but digital in any industry. I disagree with the self selecting group as we're an open platform, not just here but across social media but I understand the point.

We might not want GOT to be representative and we make every attempt to ensure we're not positioned as so (and at times I'd rather not have that burden!), but given the number of Evertonians on the site - GOT is EFC's biggest fan platform - 6-12m pages loaded a month from visitors in over 80 countries, 300k social media fans, 100k subscribers and so is inevitably representative - the question is to what degree and what significance that is.

Quick example - we sign Cenk Tosun, immediately we have a massive influx of traffic - Turkey becomes our 2nd biggest referrer replacing USA for traffic. What Turkish fans see on here will inevitability represent/influence their view on EFC.

[Edit] Here is an interesting question - what is more Everton representative and diverse than GOT? As in, if you had to analyse the fan base and report on sentiment on a particular issue across the entire fanbase, how would you do it?

Thanks GOT, interesting insight. I suppose to know that we would have to know how many Everton ‘fans’ exist and in what ways their opinions might be sought. I would guess many more than we could include in, for example, a single survey. So how to choose a sample that represents the whole? I suppose despite the variability in who accesses which, if any media (social or otherwise) Evertonians are best reached via the club itself as it’s the one thing that is essentially the common interest. As to how to get their opinions, maybe questionnaire. The thought of designing a qualitative study for this hurts my head.

I meant self-selecting in the sense that the site is accessible to many, but it is those who choose to may comment, they select themselves and represent their own opinions; I contrast this with the clubs approach of choosing season ticket holders only for their stadium survey, or any other selection criteria for surveys etc.

Apologies for the waffle, re: the site and its success I congratulate you & all who help

Depends.

If you think what's typed is representative, then you're almost certainly badly wrong. A lot of what's typed is typed by people with extreme views ( compared to most of the fanbase ), and those people are very vocal, to the point of being gobby. A current example is the "will you go to a game with Allardyce still in charge" kind of thread. If you took any notice of what you read in that sort of thread then you'd expect Goodison to be half empty, but, strangely enough, it isn't.

But, GOT has a heck of a lot of members who don't type much, if at all, but when there's a poll posted which attracts interest, it could quite easily get 1000's of votes. The results of those polls will be far more representative of what the fan base really thinks, than any of the polarised views typed in the same thread.

;)

Almost 6% from Turkey because we signed one player...that's actually quite nuts.

Indeed! Many a time I've seen a poll which went against the few gobby lot. A quite infamous one which got perma-deleted among them too.

I like the crowd here.

While Toffeeweb is a pretty good fan blog/news site, there are a number of very rabid 'personalities' in the comments section that I don't enjoy reading.

Nearly every Everton fan I speak to, some who do not frequent fan forums, generally has the same/similar views to me regarding our beloved club. Which suggests we're not a bunch of renegades on a different planet to other blues.

I think it is probably broadly reflective of the fan base, mainly because we all want success and are not blind to the team's short comings at present, we just don't all agree on what's best for the future all the time. Which is the same if you speak to other Everton fans in the stadium or down the pub. Though I would say there are probably not many over 55 on here and hopefully not too many under 18's lol

I'm over 55 and I was looking at a documentary on Youtube yesterday which said the average age for an Everton season ticket holder was 48.

We are much calm and, dare I say it, frandely on here

I'm a long way from Liverpool, and local Evertonians are nonexistent. The only place I can talk about Everton is on GOT and Toffeweb. Some viewpoints can be a little over the top at times, but are always entertaining and educational, even if I don't agree with them all.

I suspect that those that post are the passionate minority. For most Evertonians, it's probably just a game.
