Can't say I've heard of him to be honest. The Commons researchers do a good job of distilling this sort of thing, but I'm less confident that much of it gets through to them.

He'd actually get in quite a bit of trouble of the Commons researchers had helped with that pamphlet; they are only meant to be used in connection with an MP's work, not party political and awful imitations of Eagle comic. Also they are usually bright people and would probably have pointed out to him what a fool he would look.

For sure, I doubt they've had any hand in this. It largely looks like a regurgitation of Klaus Schwab's work and whilst I'm broadly supportive of the more optimistic narrative around new technologies, it's all too common in Whitehall for papers to be the be all and end all, with little of substance actually coming out of them. It is an important topic, but I'm not especially confident that our political leaders are in any way capable of responding adequately to it.

The fact that there are homeless people in every single country with a left-leaning government suggests it's a bit more complex than you're making out.

It's not binary though, is it? - as you well know. Or are you denying that Tory policy over the last seven years has directly led to a shocking increase in homelessness?

(And let us not forget that homelessness simply did not exist in the eastern bloc. That isn't to say that I'm advocating stalinist communism but it illustrates that if the political will is there.....)

I would say the recession has played the biggest part. We shouldn't forget that it's been the biggest recession in nearly 100 years, nor indeed that unemployment was technically illegal under communism (you were branded a moocher I believe), so I dare say you'd have been in prison before you ever got to be homeless.

as if the duration and intensity of the recession had nothing to do with Tory policy

Of course, they go hand in hand. All I'm saying is that it's rare for any recession not to have unfortunate consequences. Their very nature mean things usually get worse for some people. Is it preventable? I don't know, but no one in the world has really cracked it yet.

Channel 4 News's current Homelessness series of reports must make for uncomfortable viewing for anyone who's put an x in the Tory box in the past.

Watching more right now. What an eyeopener, and deeply moving at times.

Homelessness up 134% since 2011. For every 100 homeless six years ago, there are now 234, as far as we know.

Much of that is down to right wing ideology - not least, the abject lack of social housing, underfunding of local authorities and the vicious effects of benefit capping.
