How far are we from Champions League?

Not as many as you would imagine to scrape a 4th place

But the players with the ability to keep us in it consistently are light years away sadly

Look at how well Monaco are doing. Mostly through players coming through the ranks who are now 18-23. If Walsh is buying in top young talent each window then we could emulate them, or at least have quality depth.

For 2 really top centre backs such as Koulibaly and VVD we would be looking at £100mil alone. Even Lindelof was quoted at £40mil to United not long ago.

I would be really impressed if Koeman went out and spent a fortune on 2 superstar centre backs but i think we will only bring in one...i can imagine him/Walsh splitting the money around the team.

It would be epic if we did just sort the centre back positions and goalkeeper once and for all though.

You don't need two top class centre backs mate, you need 1 and for the partner to be a very solid player.

it's why the likes of Keane and Gibson are good shouts as one of those alongside someone like VVD would be a fantastic pairing, in fact that combination tends to work better than having two 'big named' players alongside each other.

Hell originally it's what United did with Ferdinand as the star player and Vidic as the solid player (just due to the success Vidic eventually became a star himself)

Got to remember it's easy for Monaco to attract top young players as there arguably the biggest or secondof biggest French teams traditionally

In England there's at least 10teams that wants and can afford to attract them

How far off?

Depends how you measure it mate, in terms of strength of the squad - at least a couple of key players off (top class centre back and a top class creative player) and at least 2-3 players as good as what we already have in certain positions

In terms of the actual situation, we are as close as turning around 1 or two results over the season, score a late winner at Goodison over the rs instead of conceding we'd be 2 points away from 4th, throw in a win instead of lose against Bournemouth and we'd be in the top 4, small margins at this level, ofc the exact same thing could be said about every single team above us and certain games.

The old adage of the table doesn't lie is true, we are where we are, we are 3 places and 8 points away from the CL mate.

Usually I don't agree when people use 'if we had done this' scenarios but I think this is a valid point on this occasion. I look at certain games where we lack that winning instinct or miss a vital chance that one of the top team would take. There have been a few this season and a couple I can think of straight away are Valencia away at Bournemouth in the final minutes. Had a chance from about 5 yards out to equalise and messed it up. Then there was that Calvert Lewin header at Hull in the last minute. I know there have been times where we have rode our luck too, like every team does, but the top teams will put the ball in the back of the net when they need to in close games. We seem to lack that composure at times which is another change in mentality that we need as a team.

Then of course we need another 3 or 4 top quality players to add to our first 11. Our squad players are fine as squad players in my opinion. We need a top centre back, left back to replace Baines, a creative midfielder (Sigurdsson), and a good partner for Lukaku. Losing Lukaku will mean we would need 2 decent strikers as I don't see us replacing him with a worthy replacement as I don't think we could attract one at this stage.

Next year or the year after I believe we can strive for that champs league spot. In terms of squad size, need a new GK,LB,CB, and also a striker or a winger.

It's pointless comparing the challenge Everton face to achieve top 4 in the PL with clubs who play elsewhere for the demands in England are far greater than any of the other European leagues.

The current top 3 have a starting 11 and possibly with the exception of Spurs have far greater quality in depth. Outside those 3 you have United, Arsenal and that other team.

The first real question which players that are in Everton's squad would be a starter in any of the top 3. Possibly Lukaku, Coleman and maybe Barkley. Drop that down to 6th place and I am not sure you add any to that list other than maybe Schdelin.Keeper wise probably an upgrade is needed and with the exception of Coleman and Funes Mori age is against the defensive regular starters, Baines, Williams and Jagielka are clearly not going to improve add the EL in to the fixture list and the complications start to multiply

In midfield there is obvious talent but is that potential , for that's what it mostly is, able to perform consistently at a higher level? Most of the prospects, and I include Davis would almost certainly benefit from a season on loan.
Up front I am not sure many have yet truly grasped the importance of Lukaku and by that I don't mean just his goal scoring exploits and even if they have then I am not sure many truly grasp how rare 20 goals a season forwards are and how difficult they are to come by.

To challenge on more than one front will almost certainly be a bridge to far for the current squad and I suspect that you are looking at maybe 8-10 players to truly challenge for a top 4 place and I don't think you are looking at £10 million players the market is becoming ever more inflated so it's probably in the range of £20-£30million + players. Will that happen? Well with the new stadium and it's funding , the constraints of the PL wage constraints I am not sure it will happen over 2 or maybe even 3 windows by which time you are looking at replacing another tranche of players

Football is littered with players who have signed for large sums who have failed and been moved on very quickly often at a loss likewise there really aren't that many true bargains to be found the scouting systems will have identified the very small numbers who it's worth taking a risk on the likes of Deli Ali are very rare nowadays.

This project is more about eveolution rather than revolution and it's pretty clear that Lukaku is too impatient for that.

Honestly we arnt that far, if we hadn't had no win in 10 we would of been right up there. In terms of improving for next season we need a new LB 2 CB and 1-2 strikers depending on Rom

In response to the title...

Further away than we was at times under Moyes/Kenwright.

A top 4 has become a top 6 and we're still "the best of the rest" but the rest got bigger.

A lot of work to do...

Don't think we are anywhere near CL as it's not so much about us as the other six teams currently above us. If we safely assume Chelsea and City will continue to buy their way to two places then that leaves the remaining two CL places between Spurs, Arsenal, Utd and RS.

Unless there is a massive drop in the fortunes of three of those four teams the we will remain on the fringe. They will stay ahead of us for the foreseeable future unless there is change in the transfer policy at the club. I suppose the summer activity will go some way to answering the question.

Hopefully things will change significantly at the end of the season as we can't be chasing a world class stadium dream will a slightly above average team. At the moment we are the best of the rest. Securing a EL place will hopefully kickstart the process.

The positions we are obviously lacking in is at cb - Williams looks poor (although think and hope its's down to not having a quality partner), Mori is never good enough and Holgate needs experience and well to just get a bit older. stronger and mature.

Central midfield - i think we are good mate, what we need is that position which has been occupied by any one of Valencia, Mirallas, Lookman etc, depending on formation, either a top second striker, a wider player or a central attacking midfielder, or any combination of that. - think Mertens or Mata etc

Put say VVD and Mertens into the starting 11 and we'd be right in the mix for top 4. Hell even adding players a level bvelow those two like keane and Siggurdson would probably have us in there

Obviously we also need a new left back to at least give us an option other than to play Baines every game even when not fully fit, and we need another striker who isn't utter rubbish

Yeah im hoping Williams improves with another top defender alongside him. Otherwise we would need to sign 2 top centre backs and have Williams and Holgate as rotation/cover which isnt a bad thing as long as we bring in top quality.

If were playing 4-3-2-1 formation i still think we lack another in the '3'. Gana/Schneiderlin/Davies are great but if we lose one of them then the only options are McCarthy and Barry. Personally id like someone to push Davies onto the bench.

Who is our Toure/Keane/Gerrard/Vieira/Essien type powerhouse who can really drive the team in the centre?

If we had someone like that alongside Schneiderlin and Gana then we would have a tremendous midfield with Davies and McCarthy to come in also...Barry phased out for Walsh perhaps.

In the 2 positions ahead of the centre and 'feeding' Lukaku we will have Barkley cemented in one position and, I agree we need another ball player in there. He would not be cheap and must have the X-Factor.

I dont think we can scrimp on the CB/CM/AM positions...three players there would really transform us. The central and attacking midfield areas would be complete but we would still lack in defence and up front.

If we go for top players, thats going to mean anywhere between £60-100mil just for those 3 positions.

I think at that point though we will be very close.

We will raise about 50m in the summer from player sales mate not counting the chance of lukaku going either.

Del (10), cleverley (8), Niasse (7) and McCarthy (20) will all be sold. Along with a few other very fringe/youth players like Tarashaj, Henen, Galloway etc.

Virgil, Keane, Gibson, Tielmans, Dolberg, Dzagoev, Siggurdson, Iheanacho, Rashford.

Would take any of these players in a heartbeat.

I think we will sign Keane who will partner Williams next season. RFM on the bench. Jags sold.

Quite possibly as per the rumours. Im not sure how good Keane is myself + whats the point in keeping Mori when we could likely get a decent fee from Spain and replace him as well?

Keane and Gibson look about on a level with Cahill i'd say, ie. solid centre half but not spectacular, very much like Jagielka has been for us really - but both better in the air. - combine them with another of similar or better level then would form a very good centre back partnership
