How do we fit Tim Cahill into the team now?

Hate to admit this for the forthcoming abuse but....

I would listen to any offer for any squad member who is on the back end of their career. Just like a striker needs to have a clinical finish, you can't get too attached at a player's end. Tim's great. He is an icon. He's been our only effective scorer this year. It would be a public relations black eye. But there comes a time if the offer is right...

Those familiar with the Dallas Cowboys and Herschel Walker might relate. There comes a time to maximize value for the future. We can't deny that something has to give. Bill isn't finding funds or buyers. We've become mediocre and stale. I wouldn't sell for peanuts but I am not saying no.

Yes so the 442 with the diamond midfield you did, has to be the option surely?

Would you drop a player who has constantly saved us all year?

This might stir a few people, but perhaps the reason he has been saving us is because he is making us play a certain way in the first place. What if we could have been having a better season if we weren't putting 10 players into a formation to suit him. He's not Lionel Messi.

*Adjusts bait, dips line into river*

I'd go 3-4-2 and let him go wherever the hell he wants, Distin is being a beast at the moment and will mop up the backline.

We should sell Cahill, because after I sold Hibbert to Newcastle for £8m on FM2011 Cahill went mental saying he couldn't believe I'd let a player of Hibbert's quality go..

This is overwhelming evidence that he is thick and he must be sold NOW!

If anyone cares to remember some of the bad days earlier this season Timmy was the shining light in the side - not just for his goals but also for his attitude. They might also remember him coming deep and doing the 'Mikel' role. Obviously not with the same finesse as Mikel can achieve (but of course not lately) but he was as effective as anyone. Additionally you should cast your mind back to Athens when Everton were both injury ravaged (beforehand) and then during the game further early injuries occurred.

The Everton side that night was:

Howard
Coleman Hibbert Distin Baines
Gosling Fellaini Cahill Pienaar Billy
Jo

Anyway with Coleman totally raw (then) we scored early - Billy in the 8th minute - and then - just to make matters worse Gosling and Distin picked up injuries inside the first 20 minutes...

Now this was the reshaped side:

Howard
Coleman Hibbert Duffy Baines
Baxter Fellaini Cahill Pienaar Billy
Jo

with The Yak being drawn from his slumbers to replace Mr. Heavy up top half way through the 2nd half..

Anyway that night Felli and Timmy were f**king brilliant - covering every blade of grass to protect the back four (think Citteh the other week but with a really poor back line behind them).. Timmy was totally brilliant with Felli in a dual Carsley type role with Felli being the big fella at the back.

Did my thread get merged with the should we sell Cahill thread?

That's annoying, if so, because my thread was about how to incorporate Cahill into a better formation, not about whether or not we should get rid of him.

Anyway, there has to be a way to incorporate him into a formation with 2 strikers. I just hope Moyes tries to figure it out, and doesn't revert back to 4-5-1.

Yeah confused why that happened too...Strange..

Without weakening or unbalancing the team? I don't think there is to be honest. He doesn't have the quality to play outwide and whilst he can and has done a job in the middle of the park, he's isn't an upgrade on Arteta, Fellaini, Osman or Pienaar. Rodwell will eventually surpass him in that position aswell.

That being said, Beckford and Saha still have alot to prove as a partnership. If Cahill is going to play, it'll be ahead of one of them, rather than Coleman, Fellaini, Arteta or Pienaar.

Say Pienaar leaves though and we don't get a replacement in. Osman has seemingly been second choice for LM this season, and him and Cahill have very similar qualities. Osman did okay there, so is playing Tim there that outlandish? We don't have any money so we will probably need an existing player to step up and make LM their own. Cahill will do a shift anywhere, and so long as he's on the pitch he's a threat for set pieces.

CM is a waste because yes we have numerous better options. But at LM we won't, when Pienaar leaves. That's what I'm getting at there.

I think the best way to do it is putting Cahill in the team as an out and out striker in Beckford's place and pair him with Saha, keep the 442 going but don't drop our talisman ffs

But you're missing the point.

Without the pace and running of Beckford, Saha won't have the same kind of space. Cahill will need Saha to be his buffer, and his distraction, to play most effectively. Beckford and Saha compliment each other, whereas Cahill up front doesn't compliment either of them.
