Horse Racing

Just discovered I've backed the winner e/w. I'd had a few when I put my bets on. lol
Bit miffed to discover William Hill only pay out on the fifth place if you bet online, would have won a few bob on that.

…..many horses are on a short fuse anyway ahead of racing. Like humans, they all have different temperaments. When they turn up at a racecourse, they know exactly what they are there for. You will often hear phrases like ‘he’s on his toes in the paddock’ or ‘he lost the race on the way to the start’. Sometimes jockeys will get them settled at the start or after the flag goes up.

I guarantee that trainer would’ve withdrawn Hill Sixteen had he known it would fatally fall at the first. Him and everybody connected with the horse will be distraught this morning. Sandy Thompson trained Hill Sixteen in the Scottish Borders. I know Thompson was a very good Rugby Union player in his time, once playing in a famous game against the All Blacks, he’s a proper decent man.

No they wouldn't. Horse racing is about making money through betting. It's absolutely nothing to do with 'sport'.

I'm 'mates' with 2 jockeys, 1 quite famous - 1 very 'infamous' and could tell you stories, let's not for 1 second think I don't know what I'm on about.

As an example, take away betting from football or rugby and see how many people watch it either live or on TV - then do the same with horse and greyhound racing.

Absolutely categorically 100% no. Let's just say 1 of them is no longer allowed to race in the UK.
That narrows it down, that's not what I'm after. For instance, sportsman X got his sisters husbands brother to stick a series of bets on... sportsman Y was using his brothers clean urine to hide his drug partying history... sportsman Z colluded with X and Y to throw a race so that unknown sportsman A won whatever with no knowledge of the plot...
The simplicity and the complicated details of each respective con are the interesting parts.

…whilst accepting folk have different opinions than me, i think that’s an unreasoned and largely ignorant view.

You suggest you would want to see all equestrian sport banned, including show jumping, eventing etc. Thousands of people including many youngsters absolutely love their horses, they are awake at dawn to muck them out, feed and exercise them. More often than not, the exercise includes popping them over fences.

So, should we ban people from owning and exercising horses and ponies? Horses are sadly better looked after than many children in our society.

Sport carries risk. You mention football, there are increasing cases of ex-footballers dying with Alzheimer’s linked to heading a ball, so should we amend the rules to stop the ball going over head height? How many boxers have died over the years yet youngsters and adults continue to take part. Rugby players are huge athletes who hit each other at great speed without head protection. American Football is under the spotlight, there was even a death in top level cricket. Drivers die or get seriously injured in motor sports.

Race horses are generally loved by their connections, particularly by stable staff who dedicate a large part of their lives to looking after them for little financial reward. More will die in their stables and out in fields than on racecourses. No idea where they will end up if equestrian sports, even pony racing and show jumping is banned, not forgetting how many jobs are associated with horses.

For those who love the sport, nothing is as bad as seeing horses injured. They are herd animals, they won’t stand quietly in a field for life. What we all support is mitigating the risk of them being hurt and the unedifying scenes in the early stages of yesterdays big race.
"Sport carries risk".
Totally agree Eggs but the big difference is that the humans can take a reasoned decision whether or not to take that risk. Animals are given no choice.

If a horse didn't want to run it would simply not run. There's a reasons the ones that do go for thousands of pounds

I know what you're after - gossip! I can't give juicy details out, obviously.

Hook us up, no specifics, you've introduced this angle, it's time to crap or get off the pot. (I think that's how the saying goes)

Haha can't I'm afraid, although I'm pretty sure everything I know regarding the 'infamous' one came out in court anyway (maybe not).

As for the other, he's from 'Yorkshire' even though I grew up next door to him till we were 18 and I've never lived in Yorkshire - same place as where the other jockey is from.
