Has it all gone a bit wrong?

Our signings so far have been really uninspiring, and the prospect of selling Fellaini or Baines for yet more average Wigan players is nauseating.

Our defence has been rubbish at the start of the season for years generally. A new manager hasnt changed that nor have new tactics. It seems it takes a while for them to get up and running.

Dont forget we have played some quality sides pre season as well.

Obviously there's going to be an emphasis on us playing shorter passes and retaining more possession, I just have my doubts as to whether we're capable.

Cast your mind back to the start of 10/11 when we tried implement a passing game and it was one of the most frustrating things I'd ever seen, we'd dominate possession but look incapable of creating a chance. That's a road we don't want to be going down again.

I don't think relegation is on the cards like someone mentioned but from what I've seen we're in for an uncomfortable season and our defensive record will be nowhere near what it was last season. That would be fine if we increase our goal output but we look toothless up front so not looking promising.

Was that the season when Howard bungled it on the opening match away to Blackburn?

That's the one. Week after week we'd pass the ball for fun but get absolutely nowhere.

Tbh, I think this "better brand of football" is a total myth, people wax lyrical about the styles employed by Swansea and Martinez at Wigan but I've seen those teams go away from home and shut up shop plenty of times playing some dour stuff in the process.

If people think now that Moyes has gone the shackles will be released and we'll go to the Emirates and boss the game then they're in for a rude awakening.

I don´t think anybody thinks that.

Many people fairly argue that playing more expansive, exciting football while leaving the back door open a bit more as a result is a positive thing after being frustrated by Moyes style of play. Personally, I think before long if we're leaking goals and it's costing us points (because let's face it, it doesn't look like we're going to be banging them in left, right and centre this year) frustration levels will be pretty high and the change will be nowhere near as welcome as it was before we kicked off preseason.

If "good" football is enough to satisfy those who wanted Moyes out purely for his style of play then fair enough, but if/when we fall behind the sh*te, they start taking the piss and the media starts patronising us even more "Arr bless, look at little Leon Osman thinking he's Xavi" etc I wonder will Moyes legacy be as grim a one as has been made out by many this summer.

I'll be intrigued to see the better style of football anyway. I thought we played some really good stuff last year, sure it was direct at times but I think that can be more entertaining than watching Jagielka and Distin pass the ball to each other for a minute.
