Hmm, not sure how he got it wrong unless the VAR wasn't zoomed in enough to see he got the ball. I only saw on the last camera shot that the defender got the ball and I think that was shown after he gave the pen.

He would have given it without VAR if he didn't think the defender got the ball though surely? There's also the fact griezmann wasn't getting to the ball imo.
