Ground alterations

What a strange thing to say.

I'm not effected by sexism, racism or homophobia but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be aware of the issues relating to discrimination in those areas, and if I wasn't aware of what they are, I'd like to think I'd take an interest in them, rather than playing the "I'm all right Jack" card.
Right yeah, I trust every Everton fan is fully versed in the latest requirements for disabled fans at sporting venues.

Give me strength.

Of course they're not.

But in a thread discussing ground improvements to cater for the disabled you've managed to show a crass indifference to the issues effecting disabled supporters, which says an awful lot about the kind of person you are, as does the "Give me strength" comment.

Could not agree more.... sadly people have been a bit insensitive regarding this issue already, having lived with my disabled parents for 30 years and helping out, its amazing the comments people make, not saying its always nasty, but its through not knowing, and people blindly say things without thinking them through or how they will be taken.

We are all Everton fans, including my disabled dad, its not easy coming to a match, but we dont let those obstacles stop us, so anything the club can do to make things easier will be more than welcome, and i think more fans should understand this, not moan about how many seats will get taken away. surely we should be glad the club are doing something? Having done my disseration (christ a long time ago now) on disabled factilites at premier league grounds and pricing, I can honestly say things have got a lot better, but there is still a hell of a long way to go.

Oh really? So in the post where I suggested the tower by Bullens Rd could've been used to give disabled fans a better view, I was showing 'crass indifference'?

If you want to point the finger at 'the kind of person' you think I am, there are countless better candidates on this thread.

Improve the access and facilities for disabled? Yes, absolutely.

Take out a considerable amount of seats to increase the capacity of disabled? Not so good. If we're one of the worst for it then yes, but I believe we have quite a lot of disabled seating with the most recent being the corner of the gwladys street.

GP will have to accommodate 92 more spaces as I understand it. It's not clear whether that translates in to 92 more wheelchairs. If it does then that will mean the removal of at least several hundred existing 'ringside' seats. The club's press release encouragingly refers to 'elevated' vantage points being created so maybe those, particularly the youngsters, who prefer front row seats might still have their preferences fulfilled. Take a look at the number of youngsters celebrating Lookman's goal as he slides towards the corner flag in Gwladys St, a far higher proportion than in other sections of the ground.

As the OP of this thread I am all in favour of improvements and increased capacity for the disabled with all different manner of difficulties. All I was pleading for was a solution, or series of solutions, that doesn't simply end up with front rows being removed.

I'd have taken seats from the family enclosure if it was me! Make the corner where the disabled section is, in the Gwladys curve round and extend it.

Give disabled fans a section where they're along side the pitch with a bit of elevation.

But good on the club!

That is quite a sensible idea really and would be good of something could be done. The gradient of most of the stands around GP would mean at least 2 rows having to taken away and do the disabled supporters themselves want to be that close to pitch? Whenever I've sat pitch side I'm always a bit twitchy just in case a stray ball smashes me in the mouth!

It would have been good to tie in that tower with some disabled seating, allowing for wider concourses and some lifts. It could have been a shining example of how to cater for the fans for the PL in general.

We all know the type of family club we are and I'm sure all on here would like to see better facilities and more seats for our disabled supporters but it's difficult to incorporate that into a stadium that wasn't built for the job.

I read somewhere that Chelsea are also short of the target but they will not be modifying Stamford Bridge as it will be knocked down in due course. I wonder if we will get a similar exemption? I suppose not as ours is a few more years at least behind.

There seems to be an assumption that wheelchair spaces need to be at the front - why?
Seating can be anywhere as long as the area is raised, so it could be at the back or in the middle - look around away grounds and you will see what I mean. Between the home/away fans at Watford half way up the stand. Half way up at Stoke. Everywhere at Man City including right up at the back Also the coldest wettest place in most stadia is at the front. That's why so many wheelchair users look as if they arrived prepared for Arctic weather or a monsoon. It's not just wheelchairs though. Many disabilities are not visually obvious, and a few people need changing facilities. At most grounds that needs to be done by lying on the toilet floor. People on the autism spectrum need different facilities and so on and so on.
It's hard to make excuses for PL clubs when the game at that level is awash with money. It's the will that's missing. Fortunately although we are stuck with an old ground at the moment there is a will to achieve the minimum requirements and the staff at Everton are brilliant

They can be anywhere if the ground has the correct ramps and access points, most of goodison is tight and cramped though. In our new gaff I'm sure they will be across all levels.

As a previous poster has mentioned the existing disabled area will have to be extended into the main stand but toilet/changing area facilities will need a massive overhaul.
