Problem is, lending huge amounts at interestis a big revenue stream for many in the west. Exactly the same mentality that fubar'ed the banking system, the buying and selling of debt.

That there are now requests for collateral in return for help is obscene. Still a game of 'on our terms only'. I hope the Greeks stand by the mandate the people have given them. For the sake of the next couple of generations following, we may have to bite the bullet and bring the whole house of cards down. We had the means to say no but chose the greed that was foisted on us.
one plan the EU put in place was to send solar panels to Crete as part of there 20% renewable s policy, and take the all the money made from the electricity directly as they didn't trust the Greeks to pay them back, even the sunshine isnt safe from them, it didnt work by the way the cost outweighs the electricity produced.
