Why? For loaning them the money in the first place?
If you live beyond your means that is your responsibility not the responsibility of the person loaning you the money! No.
Syriza are the natural cancer that flows from idiocy
We have the same sort in Ireland, Sinn Fein
Got bored killing and now want the sniff of power and to destroy all comers

No. You misunderstood what my stance is. And has been for years.

The Euro, from day one, was a massively flawed, to say the least, political ambition. Never a credible Economic one. And the creators of said beast are prepared to castrate a nation in the goal of preserving their flawed and failing project.

You cannot have a single currency without full economic unity. You just cant.

Like I said, Greece aint blameless. But the culprits are elsewhere.

Ah in life the culprits are always elsewhere, after the event
Don't disagree but the Greeks are going to have their balls cut off and electing nutters was never going to help

It makes sense for us in Europe to have economic union as far as possible. There will never be political union because our history and different cultures ensure that this is a non-starter. But anyone with any foresight can see that over the next 50-100 years it will be the economies of India and China that are going to enlarge and dominate, and Europe will increasingly need to act as one entity in order to compete with these. A single currency between neighbouring countries can work as long as their economies are convergent and they stick to the rules.

This is what is at the root of the stand-off at the moment. Comparing the stance taken by today's Germany with the Nazi regime as someone did in an earlier post is risible. Some of us in the Eurozone have taken the medicine over the last 5 years and are now emerging into the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully a compromise can be reached whereby the Greeks are given a length period of time to repay their debts as most Greek people would surely be happy to do. But to portray this impasse as some great left v right battle as some are doing completely misses the point.

The problem with this is that - as this crisis shows - economic union is impossible without political union, you cannot and have never been able to have one without the other. The problem for the EU is that we are rapidly approaching the point where this will become obvious, and its something that is in the interest of none of the nations that comprise it.

Disagree. It is possible to have economic union without political union if everyone sticks to the rules.

Thats like saying that wasps would be great if they didnt sting and annoy people.

Well no, it isn't. We've had the single currency for 16 years now. It's such a shame that the stuff spouted by UKIP is now being swallowed by the average person in the UK.

Setting your economic policy goes hand in hand with setting your political policy.

How dare Sinn Fein down arms and represent the interests of all of the people in Northern Ireland.

So we arent seeing the greatest financial crisis of our lifetime at the moment?

I am pro-European btw. I just happen to think that without Europe turned into a single state, with a single tax system, its impossible for a shared currency to succeed.

Majority of Greeks I have spoken to (i can also vote)............... are all for the NO vote............. so we will see what Monday morning brings. To ADD to my above post............. they are now rushing around getting the ballot papers translated in to various different languages.... which will be a joy in itself...... cos even in Greek...... it actually really does not make much sense re: the wording.

A perfectly reasonable point of view but one I disagree with.

Privately, a lot of the Greeks I'm speaking to say they'll vote Yes. The No campaign is louder so I think most of those that will vote Yes will do so quietely.

I think the worry about even the vague possibility of leaving the Euro will lead to a Yes vote.

Here's hoping. If they do win it'll be in the face of unheard of before meddling and coercion by forces outside a sovereign state determined to hijack the referendum with financial punishments and threats, and in the face of a right wing Greek media which gives the No campaigners almost no airtime.

A No vote on Sunday would represent the biggest victory for the European Left for decades, a shot in the arm for anti-austerity protest elsewhere in Europe, a mighty blow against the EU politically, and might even see it light the fuse on another financial crisis.
