Former Burton Albion keeper Stuart Tomlinson has swapped goal posts for ring posts after joining World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in America.

Tomlinson, who began his career at Crewe Alexandra, has penned a developmental contract with the company as he looks to begin a new career as a professional wrestler.

The 28-year-old was forced to retire from football in July after suffering a knee ligament injury.

Future opponent? Tomlinson could come up against WWE superstar John Cena

Writing to over 8,000 followers on Twitter, Tomlinson said: ‘Looking forward to a new job @WWE Swapping two posts and a net, with four posts & ropes – USA bound as of Tomorro'

The former Port Vale stopper had been working as a male model before moving to America to pursue a new life with WWE, the world's biggest and most successful wrestling franchise.

It is believed that Tomlinson met with WWE representatives during the company's European tour in November and impressed them enough to earn an opportunity.

Say cheese: Tomlinson has also worked as a model, featuring on the cover of Men's Health magazine

The musclebound former shot-stopper will now join the lower ranks of WWE as he looks to earn himself a regular spot on the company's flagship shows Raw and Smackdown.

If successful, the ex-Barrow stopper can expect to face the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton and CM Punk in the squared-circle.

Owned and run by Vince McMahon, WWE is broadcast to around 30 million people in 150 countries.
