Doesn't get much better though, right? Was pretty inspiring seeing Alex Zanardi climbing the Pordoi.

No idea who the rider is, or where he is, but that is a beautiful photo Bruce.

Did some riding in the week before the event, and went up the Passo Fedaia. There's an absolutely magical lake at the top, which with the cold weather was surrounded by snow. Was stunning. We descended the road you can see on the right.

It's in the Dolomites mountains in northern Italy. They're a world heritage site, and rightly so. Absolutely stunning.

No idea who the rider is either, but it's on the road up the Passo Sella, so you've got (I think) the Passo Pordoi in the background.

Will go with you mate. It isnt The Mendips, thats for sure.

Christ, nature is just wonderful.

Agree mate. I use to do a lot myself, not much abroad though, but The Lakes can be brilliant. Makes me want to dust the old bike off, hop on Eurostar, and feck it!

I have a major soft spot for Italy, but appreciate the French alps are easier to get to by train. You've got this one a relatively short hop from Grenoble. It's the opposite side of the valley to Alps d'Huez. Not so well known so pretty quiet. Cracking ride though with a couple of tunnels (so you'll need lights!)

The bloke I rode with did that when he was younger. Him and his lady at the time spent a month riding across northern Italy and into Austria. We're both old and responsible now, but that must have been a heck of a trip.

That sounds great. And I doubt there's many better places in Europe to cycle?

I'm not a cyclist but the idea of packing a bag, a bike and a bit of money and just riding for a month sounds awesome.

Not for me. The Italian mountains are pretty special. There's a real cycling heritage there as well, so most places have friendly folk that'll only be too happy to help you out.

Obviously this year it's been unusually cold, but I suspect most summers you could sleep out without too many concerns if you wanted to really keep costs down. The rivers and lakes were easily clean enough to wash etc. in. Reckon I'd have frozen my chamois off if I'd done that this summer though
