Surely all that protein whey stuff can't be good for your overall health..?
Just eat a chicken!
I totally agree with this. 1 4oz piece of chicken breast has the same amount of protein as a shake with 1 scoop in it.

The protein shakes are just a quick fix replacement. Your pretty much scientifically into health and know your ins and outs. Is there a difference from liquid form of protein (a shake) to solid form (food) in which the body processes these nutrients to get the best results ? Surely a liquid form is processed quicker and more efficiently

This is relative to what shake you're using. You really cannot generalise anything when it comes to supplements because of the huge range that is available. You can get shakes with 60g protein per scoop.

Yes, shakes a useful as a quick fix. In terms of protein there is no difference, however, in eating chicken to drinking shakes. You're still getting protein either way and your body will use it the exact same way, every time, to repair your muscles. The difference comes when you look at other nutrients. As I said before, you can get all different kinds of protein shakes. Each one is different in terms of the composition of nutrients and the amounts of them. It all comes down to a balanced diet. You can't get everything from shakes but it helps with specifics.

tl;dr: food is food, digested the exact same way. Only difference is what is in the food.

I'm not big into the supplement side of things nor the weight-training thing, but if you're comparing some real solid food to a shake then I'd take the real food any day. Aside from its macronutrient content, the meat will have vitamins and other nutrients that you won't get in the supplement.

I would imagine that a powder/shake would be more quickly absorbed in the gut than solid food (this might matter acutally if you're talking about the most effective window), and is more just more convenient to use, plus you can mix it with a little bit of energy drink during/post workout.

I think a lot of people overdo it on protein intake in general, and its one of the biggest mistakes when you are trying to cut carbs. Common wisdom amongst the knowledgeable low-carb sports community is that you should eat about 1g-1.5g of protein for every Kg of body mass, so for a guy like me that would be only 70g-100g of protein a day, which would translate to about just about 12%-17% of total energy intake, with carbs <10% and the other 70%-75% or so by fats. Of course if you're looking to put on muscle mass you'll want to bump up the protein a bit, but too much will trigger gluconeogenesis in your liver and you'll start to reconvert the protein to glucose which could retrigger the fat storage mechanism.

Yes shout on the fad of supplements and shakes. People go overboard on it.

I do from time to time switch between protein shakes and pre workout stimulants (no steds so pipe down Bruce lad I'm not buying from you) but its not the answer if you don't have a strict diet with it, or the training intensity to go with it either. I know lids who think they're shape right up by drinking these shakes but have three minutes in between sets in the gym.

Nothing wrong with 3 minutes between sets. If you're training strength.
