I knew Gordon from his Security work at RAF Woodvale, was a top bloke for Everton and in retirement. RIP Gordon.

That he refused to travel to Mexico for the 1970 world cup. A decision that possibly had a direct impact on England's tournament. When Banks (then the best goalkeeper in the world)

Gordon West was the first choice keeper for England before the 1970 World Cup. He didn't want to be away from his family fro a long time. He had wife problems.

RIP Gordon West.

The 66-70 side he played in was the reason I became an Evertonian.

West, Wright, Labone, Newton, Kendall, Ball, Harvey, Husband, Royle, Morrisey, Whittle.

Legends the lot of them.

Mate thats a list of posters on my bedroom wall mid to late 60's. So sad to see another legend from my childhood pass away. RIP Gordon and many thanks for being one of my heros growing up. My respects to his family.

You do pick your moments don't ya fella?
A good moment. He was on the south american tour in summer 1969 and played against Mexico ; 0-0. Banks played in the two other games against Brazil (1-2) and Uruguay (2-1). Westy didn't like the tour and told them he didn't want to know. He never played another England game.

He was one of the first to keep the game rolling by grabbing the ball and throwing it out immediately, very far, to midfielders and forwards keeping possession. Most keepers grabbed the ball, looked around and kicked it upfield with a 50-50 chance of losing the ball. He was part of the Catterick possession football team. No long ball at Everton. School of Science.
