Quote from Joe Royle
Sad that
Goes to show what a grand old club this is. Speaks volumes of us
That he refused to travel to Mexico for the 1970 world cup. A decision that possibly had a direct impact on England's tournament. When Banks (then the best goalkeeper in the world)
Gordon West was the first choice keeper for England before the 1970 World Cup. He didn't want to be away from his family fro a long time. He had wife problems.
RIP Gordon West.
The 66-70 side he played in was the reason I became an Evertonian.
West, Wright, Labone, Newton, Kendall, Ball, Harvey, Husband, Royle, Morrisey, Whittle.
Legends the lot of them.
A good moment. He was on the south american tour in summer 1969 and played against Mexico ; 0-0. Banks played in the two other games against Brazil (1-2) and Uruguay (2-1). Westy didn't like the tour and told them he didn't want to know. He never played another England game. You do pick your moments don't ya fella?
