Goodison Flops

I think we paid a decent fee for Whiteside, he was only 24 at the time but his career was already over due to his knees. Cottee we paid 2.2m for in the late '80's, making him the most expensive player in british history, he never did it for me. Just my opinion like

yeah that debut hat-trick just had 'not good enough' written all over it.

VDM
Beattie
Anichebe

Worst I've seen with my own eyes: Tony Thomas (season 97-98, 10 appearances !!)
Most expensive flop : Andy Van Der Meyde (talented, but couldn't care less)

72 goals in 184 appearances. A goal every two and a half games in a side that was by and large garbage?

We've seen a lot, lot worse in royal blue.

I always got a bit frustrated with Cottee he was good but no more i suppose maybe having Lineker here for that season had raised the bar higher than Cottee could have hoped to reach (ok he was small but not talking about height:))

Whiteside could have been a shrewd signing but for his knees a shame that

Would like to add Alan Biley to the list

I've just read that after us he went to Watford, who settled up his contract after a year. He then went to Charlton, but failed to make any appearances and was released the following summer. He did then settle at Coventry, however, where he stayed for four years, going on to captain the side. Perhaps it was a mental thing that he eventually got over? At Arsenal he showed glimpses of real quality. My memory of him at Everton though was that he was afraid to tackle.

Not saying cottee was the worst we've had just that, for me, he was a flop. The hat-trick against Newcastle made it worse as I genuinely thought he would do the business for us.

I think he just epitomised the end of the 80's start of the 90's at everton for me. Defenders must have relished coming up against him, Johnston, Beagrie, ward, etc. At 5' nothing. We needed some pace and power up top along Beardsley but ended up with the most diminutive strike force in history, which is probably why Duncan was such a breath of fresh air when we signed him.

Cottee scored goals, I think he is criminally underrated tbh. Yakubu is the closest we have come since to a 20 goal a season striker.

Agreed if Cottee had a player of some height with him then maybe he would have been the 20 a seaosn man he clearly had the talent to be i saw him down at upton park in '85 with Mcavennie as his partner and he did look very good and i think that adds to my frustration with him.
