Goats squad analysis thread 2024/5

So - on the basis that Mangala is done for the season and the likes of Coleman, McNeil, DCL, Broja & Chermiti will be back in the fold within 4-6 weeks, the squad for the run-in is now looking like this: -

I think with no Mangala and Harrison Armstrong gone to Derby for the rest of the season, we're looking a bit light in CM. I'd expect that, if needed, Doucoure will probably drop into CM with Alcaraz stepping in, possibly McNeil when he's eventually fit again.

I don't think that looks too bad personally, at least until the end of the season.
.
I don't hate it, but it does need a lot of work over the rest of the season and Summer to get new blood in that will improve that squad.

I expect Moyes to have us competitive for the rest of the season if not exactly world beaters and that should be enough. Though if he doesn't get backed in Summer to raise those expectations that will be a poor showing from the new regime.

Should have bought Ekitike. 15m euros. Unbelievable Jeff!
notts forrest paid off with Gibbs White, we were in the mix?
Gnonto I'm not sure about, seems dirt ball filthy leeds might be back next year, lets see if he's the real deal this time round.
Truffert for LB? Keeping Myko as a squad player for LB and LCB cover makes sense there.

I wanted a Moyes type recruitment overseeing the new staff, here it comes.

Just for fun, this is what the squad POTENTIALLY could look like, if we dont take up any loans or any extensions.

Goalkeepers
Jordan Pickford (HG)

Right Backs
Nathan Patterson

Left Backs
Vitaliy Mykolenko

Centre Backs
Jarrad Branthwaite (HG)
James Tarkowski (HG)
Jake O'Brien

Midfield
James Garner (HG)
Tim Iroegbunam (UA)
Iliman Ndiaye (HG)

Wide Forwards
Dwight McNeil (HG)

Strikers
Youssef Chermiti (UA)
Beto

Total players: 12
That leaves us with only 5 HG players also, 2 UA and 4 Non HG players.

I vaguely recall a trained by the club rule, but that might potentially be only valid for CL?

Either way, from having no HG issues previously, it is something we will need to look at with regards recruitment.

The Homegrown Player Rule is an initiative of the English Premier League to allow for more domestic players to be developed from an earlier age in the hope of nurturing more homegrown talent. It forms part of the League's Elite Player Performance Plan. The Premier League proposed a maximum of 17 non-"homegrown" players in each club squad, and the squad size is a maximum of 25. This means that in a full squad of 25 players, there must be at least eight homegrown players.

I suspect a few extensions will be given, so the above probably isnt accurate, but its a possibility.

Starting to believe we'll see Gana, Doucoure, and Young all offered at least another 12 months.

Mangala and Broja have significant injury to try to get past. We'll see if Moyes fancies Alcaraz by how much he plays him. Lindstrom I'm not convinced. Harrison winds me up probably worst in the squad. It's looking more likely than not we lose Cal-Lewin for nothing. If Torino came in and offered us as much of our £25m for Beto back, I'd snatch their wrists off.

We're in a right mess.

We've tried to spend our way up the league previous, and it didn't pay off. It actually came back and punished us. I don't see much in the league that'd be attainable.

My hot take:

Get to 36-38 points and start seriously looking at introducing two or three younger lads to the side. We need to start giving the 'best' of our younger players a proper look heading into the summer.

Think the best of our youth is at Derby and not much after him atm

Personally hope we can get players back and keep winning as many games as possible, push up the table and get as high as we can, every place will help us spend more in the summer

Not enough young and/or home grown players

Your dream has finally come true!

There aren’t any in the U21’s and the leap from U18’s is far too big.
