Not enough young and/or home grown players

Your dream has finally come true!
Not really Mikey, its quite bad and 1 reason I have monitored the HG players for a number of years.

It will become a real problem if we make Europe, CL in particular and is something we really need to start addressing and quickly.

Ive no problem with young players, my problem is the way people hype up certain young players and wonder why they end up in League Two.

Whatever mate

You’ve been putting up the bunting all morning

It’s the talk of Birkenhead

“That Everton supporter down the road just bought a 5 layer ice cream cake”

“Why? Is it a wedding, university graduation or a milestone birthday?”

“Nah, Everton just got rid of all their kids and now don’t have enough”

“Oh…is it that Goat lad?”

“It is”

“Oh yeah, that tracks”

How will we cope without all the League Two players.

I've been discussing in the net about all things Everton for about 33 years now. One of the most obvious things that keeps repeating is how fans are hyped over the youngsters. Every year we apparently have about five players in the youth team who will make the jump to first team next season so that's many positions sorted for free. And once pre-season ends, how many are there? Quite often none. Most of these lads end up couple of divisions down. Some have since moved to management, like Schumacher who was going to be a first-team regular at Everton, apparently. Somehow, every year club releases a bunch of these guys.

If your Academy can produce one first-team player every year, it's doing a good job. Two would be a great year. Every club in the country has tried to sign the best youngsters and there's no way we'd see dozens of U21 players breaking through next season. And we are not the most coveted club for promising players.

Looking at past transfers, some players who should (have) be(en) first team players or sold for a profit, according to fans: Matthew Pennington, Beni Baningime, Luke Garbutt, Kieran Dowell, Brendan Galloway, Tyias Browning, Conor McAleny, John Lundstram, Matty Kennedy, Jose Baxter, John Paul Kissock...

Niels Nkounkou, Antonee Robinson...

Just for fun, this is what the squad POTENTIALLY could look like, if we dont take up any loans or any extensions.

Goalkeepers
Jordan Pickford (HG)

Right Backs
Nathan Patterson

Left Backs
Vitaliy Mykolenko

Centre Backs
Jarrad Branthwaite (HG)
James Tarkowski (HG)
Jake O'Brien

Midfield
James Garner (HG)
Tim Iroegbunam (UA)
Iliman Ndiaye (HG)

Wide Forwards
Dwight McNeil (HG)

Strikers
Youssef Chermiti (UA)
Beto

Total players: 12
That leaves us with only 5 HG players also, 2 UA and 4 Non HG players.

Is it controversial for me to suggest that I think this is fine?

Add Gana, Alcaraz & Armstrong into it the mix and fill out the rest of the squad in the summer transfer window, starting with the fullbacks and then skip to the forwards before dealing with anywhere else.

I vaguely recall a trained by the club rule, but that might potentially be only valid for CL?

Either way, from having no HG issues previously, it is something we will need to look at with regards recruitment.

The Homegrown Player Rule is an initiative of the English Premier League to allow for more domestic players to be developed from an earlier age in the hope of nurturing more homegrown talent. It forms part of the League's Elite Player Performance Plan. The Premier League proposed a maximum of 17 non-"homegrown" players in each club squad, and the squad size is a maximum of 25. This means that in a full squad of 25 players, there must be at least eight homegrown players.

I suspect a few extensions will be given, so the above probably isnt accurate, but its a possibility.
That makes it pretty clear where we need to add to the squad. We're only 3 short of the HG quota, so I'd say that would be fairly easy to achieve with the players we bring in. Not ideal needing to bring in 13 players to fill the squad, but this is what it is. I'd expect a couple of extensions to be made (Gana and Virginia). I'd expect we would make at least 4 loan signings, and another 6 or 7 to come in on permanent deals. Going to be a busy summer.
