Erm...she happens to be an educated young woman from a good family and background, who just happens to have decided to upset the gods by showing off her bazookas, let's not dismiss her future life of bringing in a breakthrough in the field of Astro-physics just because she has tits and you Americans are all porn slaves..........

I bet they look stellar

She caused an earthquake which killed 18 people.

Or has maybe offended a local community by totally disregarding their customs and beliefs by deciding that her beliefs and customs are the only ones that matter.

Yeah.. bit like them seeing a 'no ball games' sign up on top of the mountain.. totally ignoring it and staging an fa cup final up there!

I'd be more peed off that a god I worship decided to kill 18 of us in a pique of anger rather than the silly sods that caused it offence in the first place. I appreciate logic doesn't tend to have much place in these discussions and all...

I think we all need to look at the bigger picture here. She upset the mountain gods. DESTROY HER.
This is where it falls down for me. I'm all for respecting cultures, however;

Did she harm anyone? No. Had she destroyed or defaced something? No. Has she upset a mountain spirit? Hell yes, let's prosecute.

I'm sorry, that's mad.

You could say the same about many (religious) laws though, such as being homosexual. Obviously it's madness that it can be illegal to be gay but it is still very real and does derive from religion as this does spirit.

She's killed 18 people Grouch. I just hope her sentences run back to back and the sorcerous wench doesn't get anywhere the great Dunshaughlin fault line.

Seriously though, nowhere mentions a potential sentence. She's hardly going to get a few years in the C, is she?

Indeed. Madness as you say.

Are they 18 mountain spirit people?

It doesn't matter how stupid or mad it all seems to us. When travelling abroad you need to be mindful of other cultures, traditions, and ways. These people were even told beforehand of what was not acceptable behaviour.

It's about time that the British, along with others, realised that the World does not revolve around them and their arrogant, ignorant, attitude towards the rest of population whom we share this planet with.

  • Sabah's Kadazan Dusun tribe believe the mountain houses the spirits of their dead ancestors
  • The name Kinabalu is derived from the tribe's phrase "Aki Nabalu", which means resting place of the dead
  • Climbers are told by guides, many of whom are Kadazan Dusun, to treat the mountain with respect and to refrain from shouting, screaming or cursing at it
  • Every December the tribe conducts a ritual called the Monolob to appease the spirits and allow climbers to continue visiting the mountain
  • A priestess, called a Bobolian, makes an offering of seven white chickens accompanied by seven chicken eggs, betel nuts, tobacco, limestone powder, and betel plant leaves. The Bobolian leads a chant and the chickens are then slaughtered, cooked, and given to the ceremony participants
  • In the past, this ceremony was conducted before every ascent, and climbers used the cooked meat as rations for their journey

It's all a bit silly, as you say. But having a bit of respect for people's beliefs when you're in their lands is hardly too much to ask, is it? Imagine if some Malaysian lad touched down in JLA in a Maggie Thatcher t-shirt.
Absolutely, that's fair enough.

I'm all for respecting cultures, but when someone's in actual bother for upsetting a mountain spirit, I think the world in general has gone nuts.
