Gerard Deulofeu

I like your style but couldn't we have two actual midfield players rather than defensive mids or cart horses as we used to call them . Oh and lose Barkley , cheers. :)

Reality in the modern game is you have to have players who can interrupt the counter attack if it breaks down in the final third, because loads of sides now counter at pace. That's why the 4-4-2 is no longer really played, as too often you're out of shape in that system if your strikers lose the ball unexpectedly.

So I don't have an in-built problem with two defensive midfielders; what I have a problem with though is the lack of balance going the other way. If you're going to have those two players, you should be taking chances further up the pitch, otherwise you get pinned back too easy when the opposition figure you out and have no outball, like Liverpool did to us.

I know it's easy to "Football Manager" and theorycraft football when sitting at home on a keyboard, but I honestly do believe the way we currently set up is so obviously wrong that I'm amazed a manager paid thousands upon thousands a week can't pro-actively try and change it, given he's doing absolutely nothing different to Martinez other than hitting the odd ball long from defence.

Just feel sorry for him. He would have been perfect against Liverpool in that second half, but instead we had nothing. Calvert-Lewin looks a prospect, but not on the wing.

Best for him to move on to a club who will use his talents effectively.
He had a very good pre season the more you play well for RK = dropped ask Holgate too!
you have to be an OAP to get in our team!
motm v Watford = dropped - RK is proving to be a ginger worse than DM!
2 wins in 12 games????????

watching barry running only playing 45 minutes an OAP with a walking stick could move faster than him we were up against a fast passing team last night and he only had 45 minutes of dire tackling, passing and the inability to run , and delboy cannot make the bench????????????????

...I think Barry is taking too much stick. Sure we missed McCarthys running power but the signs were already there in the last 15mins of the first half that we were sitting back. Barry came on and we coped ok defensively. The problems were that the attack minded players lacked quality to get hold of the ball and push the Reds back.

I'm sure Barry's days as a regular starter are numbered but he wasn't the main problem last night.

Woah.

Wait a minute.

Before the Arsenal game, people were crying out for Valencia to play.

Don't pretend they weren't.

And in fact, Valencia did more in the Arsenal game to warrant a run than Deulofeu has all season.

He pressed and hassled and supported Rom and held the ball up.

Last night, he did the same, but tailed off after half-an-hour.

I don't know why Del wasn't on the bench last night. Only the manager does.

But fgs, do not - and this goes for @Zatara as well - start revising history Khal.

I thought Del played very well vs Watford in the second half. He didn't 'run the show', but I thought he done well.

I'd have liked him to have been in the squad last night, but there was nothing wrong with retaining a winning team, that actually started the game extremely well.

Well, they got what they wanted and you are the very man was most vociferous in wanting a change in tactics and support for Rom up front.

Heck I even agreed with you.

But you were all proven wrong last night......he looked exactly what he is.

A West Ham third choice striker totally out of his depth.

Why are you getting yourself so het up about this, Toff?

The sooner you start recognising the fact that Koeman is more and more resembling the King in his birthday suit and that @Zatara is the boy in the crowd pointing a finger at him the sooner your posts will appear more realistic and balanced.

"revising history" indeed.....

harrumph.....:p

He can get the ball at his feet and run with no fear at defenders. Put him through the middle.

FFS we've tried every other combination

Or he will run into the defender with his first attack and then go missing for the rest of the game.

Thats his problem, its one or the other.

We have nobody who runs at defender's from central position's, he can be quite neat and tidy on the ball. I would give him and try and see. But unfortunately I can see del following the same path as bojan

I think this defines the saying, "Damning with faint praise"!

...a few months ago he was being lauded as our best player, amazing how quickly fortunes change. I just think he was the least of our problems last night. Lennon, Barkley, Valencia and Lukaku did very little to push the Reds back and relieve the pressure. The loss of McCarthy was a blow but the 4 offensive players have lots to answer for.

No disagreement there. My slightly obsessive qibble with the club is that you don't improve a disappointing midfield by giving a contract extenion to GB. A mobility scooter, perhaps, but not more time on the payroll.
