Current Affairs General US politics (ie, not POTUS related)

Only gonna get worse as the mad policies continue. Dozens of Oaklanders attending a city public meeting hold their hands up that they have been assaulted or confronted by criminal elements. A large number of women it appears. I'd be smug if it weren't so tragic. There will be a backlash at some point:

What "mad policies" are you referring to?

For a few months before it begins again. If you play Russian roulette enough times someone if going to get shot in the head.
A few years ago McConnell (yup, McConnell) put forward a proposal to switch from voting to raise the debt ceiling to voting to stop the debt ceiling being raised. As in, it gets raised automatically unless congress steps in and votes not to.
This actually makes sense to me.

It's punted to 2025. Should be less radioactive right after an election. I agree with your general sentiment, though.

Everyone I think has a brain in their skull in the chamber, with the exception of Bernie, Fetterman and Warren, voted 'yea'. Bernie's 'nay' is a little more understandable - he's been willing to die alone on some interesting hills over the years. Even Sinema voted 'yea', and I don't see her in that crowd. When you're picking up Thune, Tillis and Young, odds are you crafted a good piece of compromise legislation.
2025 is going to be busy

Oof, that is a lot of sunset provisions. Dems need to either hold the presidency or take the House, because I have a hard time seeing them holding every seat in the Senate in 2024. Sinema, Stabenow (retiring), Tester, Rosen, Brown and Manchin are all very scary holds, and even Casey and Baldwin are a little iffy. Against that, they might flip Cruz or Rick Scott in an absolute blue wave election. Horrid map for them.

2025 will be quite the day of reckoning for them if they don't manage to control something.

Just looking at some social media today and it seems like the right are having a go at Tom Morello for posting an anti Nazi meme. They are also flipping out because NASCAR and the Buffalo Bills have posted messages of support to signal pride month.

It seems like we're hitting a nexus here where so many on the right are just putting their bigoted, homophobic, xenophobic, racist cards on the table.
And how are Christians so openly going on about grooming? as if the repulsive history of the church in relation to child sex abuse just didn't happen??

There's gotta come a point where some who were just fiscal conservatives stand up and go 'ah here lads, this is nuts'.

Sure, but expecting Republicans(especially effette Senate Republicans) to deliver a day of reckoning once they control the House and Senate is a mugs game. I'm almost at the point of putting all my faith in SCOTUS, some big SCOTUS decisions expected in the near future.

One would be to employ enough cops. The force is down massively in numbers these past few years. It's a problem that is probably going to get worse. A lot of experience has been lost with these drop in numbers. The standard of policing in SF will be mediocre for the foreseeable future.

The Oakland police force is down 8% in 2022 from a high in 2019 of 749 (data from 2018 to 2022). The 2022 budget includes staffing for 726 sworn staff. This is not "massive" and cannot be viewed as a "mad policy." San Francisco is not Oakland.

You left out the part where they were upset with Chick Fil-A, an openly homophobic company, possibly getting slightly less homophobic by hiring a CEO of diversity.

True, I got my cities mixed up. It had been the best part of a day since I posted on the Oakland scandal.

Edit; btw take the Oakland numbers you posted with a pinch of salt. SF are lying about their numbers so I assume Oakland probably are too.
