Current Affairs General US politics (ie, not POTUS related)

Let me just leave this clip here in the spirit of throwing a tasty ham hock into a river filled with piranhas.

Our topic is US politics, but the issues covered here transcend national boundaries. My longtime contention has been that our problem is not Trump, rather, that Trump is a symptom of our true problems, many of which are referred to in this clip. I'll just leave things right there while explaining that the animated clip I leave here explains things even more clearly than the original clip due to the added illustrations. In any case, it's ten entertaining and informative minutes that will make you think.

I will offer the reassurance that our narrator loathes our President at least at much as you, and considerably more that I do. As stated before, I feel Trump is a distraction from the real issues that shape our future. I see his appearance as analogous to Asimov's The Mule from his Foundation trilogy. What Trump brings is a sense of chaos to the narrative, which many folks think is just the kind of shakeup that the narrative needs.

More clips to follow on a variety of topics. If you become interested look up the brothers Weinstein, Eric and Bret, to draw some context to some of the topics referred below. If you don't watch the clip, kindly respect us enough to withhold commentary. Apologies to the mod who will feel obligated to watch whether they want to or not to determine if this needs to be expunged to conform to the GIN. You'll need to watch to know what that means.

Newsom and his team are coming up with some creative ideas

Pity most conservatives in this state will immediately hate him. Despite how good he has been so far.

I was watching a clip from Kimmel and he was talking to the governator (Arnie) who said that Newsom reached out to all previous governors both blue and red for ideas. Apparently he seeks advice from his peers a lot.

Rather damning article on New York’s response
Today, New York City has the same social-distancing policies and business-closure rules as Seattle. But because New York’s recommendations came later than Seattle’s—and because communication was less consistent—it took longer to influence how people behaved. According to data collected by Google from cell phones, nearly a quarter of Seattleites were avoiding their workplaces by March 6th. In New York City, another week passed until an equivalent percentage did the same. Tom Frieden, the former C.D.C. director, has estimated that, if New York had started implementing stay-at-home orders ten days earlier than it did, it might have reduced covid-19 deaths by fifty to eighty per cent. Another former New York City health commissioner told me that “de Blasio was just horrible,” adding, “Maybe it was unintentional, maybe it was his arrogance. But, if you tell people to stay home and then you go to the gym, you can’t really be surprised when people keep going outside.”

Just about to post this. Excellent idea to keep small business afloat, keeps the vulnerable at home and ensures they dont go hungry.
Also helps the farmers who supply the restaurant trade and provides local sales tax revenue to keep those councils afloat.

Am probably a bit biased as he is my governor but with the notable exception of testing think that Newsom is doing an excellent job and focusing on competent governance rather than political grandstanding.

Think Cuomo is getting a lot of credit but looking behind the headlines and his media appearances, he has cut precious funding and is keeping the prison populations at a high.

This guy is doing what a leader should do quietly and under the radar.
