Gary Lineker

...he was fantastic, a goal machine. Rooney is a different type, so I don’t think a comparison by goals is entirely accurate.

Just pointing out that the record scorer has 3 more goals in 30 odd games and Bobby Charlton was the record holder with a single goal more than lineker an he also played over 100 games. Lineker was the best goal scorer that England has produced imo, I know some will say Dixie but the game was very different back then.

I may be being a little hard on Lineker here, but I just don't like him.

Whenever I see him mouthing off his opinions on tv I just want to swap channels.

Great striker for a few seasons but I wouldn't cross the road to talk to him.

He was a great player, his only fault was he wasn't Gray or Heath!
I find the 'he hates us' thing bizarre to be honest.
Sharpy has a balanced view on him ie we sold Andy Gray far too soon, oh, and Lineker was always claiming muscle pulls hardly trained lay in a hot bath while he, and inchy were training outside in rain etc at Bellefield.......
Sharpy claimed Lineker became a far better player when transfered to Barcelona from a speed merchant on how to hold a ball up - then went to Spurs- sounded like no love lost between them imo reading his autobiography......

It took us half a season to like him, then we loved him, then he left.
Shame we lost him as he really was a tremendous goal scorer.

Yeah, he wasn't a trainer at all by all accounts. I find most of the 80s teams books a bit off to be honest. Only really liked Neville's and Reids.

Best goalscorer I've ever seen in a Blue shirt by a distance who after a slow start ended being a perfect fit for that Everton side. His explosive pace just gave us another option. Just a real shame his was only a short stay.

Unbelievable we didn't win anything considering him and Sharpy weighed in with an incredible 64 goals between them in 85/86. I reckon they'd have got better and better as partnership had they stayed together. They were both only 25 when Lineker left and still a few years off their prime.

He's stated many times we were the best side he ever played for and that's some compliment considering he played for Barca too. I believe he would've stayed with us had we still had European football but a lot of top British players were disappearing to the continent during that disgraceful ban.

Some Blues seem offended because we're not top of his list of favourite clubs but considering he's from Leicester, supported them as a kid and played for them until he was 24, it's not suprising that they're his number 1 club. I've no problem with that myself.

One of perhaps three world squad of 22 players we've had in the last forty years, but on the other hand, he did like a hot bath. It's good to hear balanced views like this, joey66.

Did enjoy Sharpy's book, mind. He didn't seem like the best judge of a player but him and Nev were the players who were there through the rise, triumph, and fall. They basically saw first hand the difference between a team of winners and a team of losers.
