Gareth Barry

Can't do the job he's there to do and it's killing us. Our back 4 gets bugger all protection regardless of whether he's playing well or not.

He's not there to do that job. He's there to drop back in and start our attacks. He gets exposed by pace - which i why having McCarthy next to him is key.

I've said it time and time again, but James McCarthy is the one player that makes this team tick.

I'm not really sure what games you watch. His reading of the game and the work he puts in makes a huge difference. He can't stop everything. And as esk said, he is always available for a pass. I think he has become a bit of a scapegoat, easy target. Fans will only aprciate what he does when he isn't in the team.

McCarthy's okay but so far away from the quality our fans perceive him to have. I'd probably appreciate him a lot more if he had someone more dynamic along side him, as it happens him and Barry are as full as a central midfield pairing gets.

We'll never see it because he's always in the team. He doesn't stop anything at all. If he did then we wouldn't be in the current mess we are.

You shouldn't need anything more to look at than the results we have with McCarthy in the team compared to without.

Well looking at our results then, is the job he's been given the right one for the team and is it working ?

He gets exposed by pace. But yesterday was a freak game. The only way to even have a chance at beating Leicester is to go all out attack. It's what Arsenal did. Wenger actually changed his entire style for that one game, and it worked. We played some nice stuff but reverted to type in the second half, and Martinez failed to make the changes early enough.

Barry is fine, and he's been doing a good job all season. People seem to think he's in the team as this destructive player, but he really isn't. He keeps our possession ticking over and gets the moves started. As I say, get McCarthy next to him and he's a different player.

Think Barry has played well all season. Problem with him is he struggles to complete the 90 mins in good form. He is visibly knackered from 70-75 mins onwards and that's when more fouls and misplaced passes happen from him but excellent till then. When McCarthy and Besic are fit again I would like to see him subbed late on.

They're pretty similar tbh. People were citing McCarthy as the saviour last year and that didn't materialise.

LAST SEASON:
With McCarthy - 1.41 points per game
Without McCarthy - 0.82 points per game

With Barry - 1.03 points per game
Without Barry - 2.6 points per game

THIS SEASON:
With McCarthy - 1.5 points per game
Without McCarthy - 0.67 points per game

With Barry - 1.35 points per game

Last season showed in the 5 games without Barry that we could play McCarthy/Osman, Besic/Barkley, Gibson/McCarthy and win 4 out of the 5 games drawing the other. His insistence to play Barry every minute of every league game didn't work last season and is getting to the stage this season where it isn't working again. Play the other players or get some new ones in that you want to play. Relying on a soon to be 35 year old as your midfield lynchpin is not the answer.

Shows how important JM is. But for me, Barry didn't have a bad game yesterday, far from it. He does need to be rested soon, though, I agree - but with our run of games coming up I think he'll play every one.

RM needs to start planning now for life without Barry. He's been effective in the side this season due in part to his top flight experience and professional attitude.
Yesterday Mori ballsed up for the first goal but Barry was there covering and would have snuffed out the cross.

Barry makes so many mistakes that it's unbelievable. The difference between him and howard is that not all of them lead to the goal.

Simple example. The corner or free kick for Palace where he was pulling Palace player's shirt in our box right in front of the referee. If he had seen it, it wouldnt be even a draw.

There are lots of bigger and smaller mistakes every game. Saying he is so important for the way we play is like saying that Tim Howard is such a key figure because all our attacks start from him and he is irreplaceable as he's a fantastic passer

You can say that about any player for any team though
