Gareth Barry

He slows everything down, his passing is too conservative in both speed and incisiveness. Wide players are forever checking back to get a pass from Barry. He takes too long on the ball, far too ponderous, then when he does lay it off to Ross or Davies theyre inevitably taking it standing still, with opposition players on them immediately. Compare him to someone like Carrick who sweeps penetrating passes in front of players already on the run bringing them into the game. Too slow, too negative, too old, he plays we lose.

Brilliant signing imo but he's been patchy ever since his first season. 2nd season Martins over played him far too much. 3rd season we were generally crap all over. This season started off well but has struggled the last couple of months.

No shame in that btw, he wants to play and is still getting picked. Looked so much fresher when coming on with 15 to go against the Saints. Starting games when we need to be quick and press is where he's struggling at the minute. Yesterday he was bloody awful with his half arsed tackles.

Lost the ball an awful lot trying to pass forward too. Obviously I want him to pass forward but do not hit a 40 yard ball out for a goal kick wtf

Didn't even look like getting booked yesterday, which is a sign he has lost something, as much as he wants to beat Giggs record his body isn't up to it

Could well be all of that ... could also be that he is out of form now and lacking confidence.

The first 3 months, Barry and Gueye were basically the only two pieces of this team functioning properly. In fact, fair to say that Barry was actually playing well through to November.

So can it be that his age has all of a sudden caught up with him in the space of 6 weeks, or could it also be a case of a player now out of form after a few sub-standard outings?

Reality is that he isn't going to be starting for much longer, with Schneiderlin expected and Gueye back in a month, they will be starting if fit and Barry + Davies will be on the bench. He is just needed for literally one more month, at which point it would become quite alarming should he continue to start going into February, March and beyond.

He's been impeding us for years, it's amazing how bad it needs to get before people can see it.
Just like he was impeding Man City when he was a key player in a title-winning side?

Not every CDM needs to be a Gueye-type player who makes 6 tackles and covers 15km a game. In fact, if Everton had 2 x Gueye in CDM it would be a bit of a train wreck because ball distribution going forwards wouldn't be good enough.

As an outsider looking in, I am a little stunned that of all the issues Everton have had over the past 3 or 4 years, you think Gareth Barry is the player that has been impeding you.

barry gets far too much stick in this forum consistently runs the most, makes crucial interceptions and smart passes with the occasional bit of great through balls or passes cutting through the lines.

he's the sort of player people don't notice because he does what you need to tick. however he's old and his pace is a liability and without two energetic CMs supporting him he can't be as inventive in possession. essentially a poor, not world class, english pirlo who gets far too much crap thrown out him when the team plays poor
