Our midfield near enough disappears when he is included. It's been like that for years as well. The fact that he still might get a game indicates just how unbelievably poor we have been in central midfield in recent years.

It disappears when he isnt included too usually.

The Arsenal game was boss but lets wait and see if it was a one off first before declaring people are finished etc.

Some have considered Barry to be substandard for quite a long time mate. I don't believe he would be starting for many other top half clubs, if any at all. If you asked me where he would rank in Everton central midfielders over the last 10 years then I would have him way down the list.

...he's been a fine acquisition and whilst I'm sure RK is ready to get a replacement in, Barry can still do a job when required. I suspect he's also a really good influence off the pitch and that could help RK as he assembles a new squad. For those who say his legs have gone, he's never been the athletic type who covers lots of ground, he's just a very smart footballer. That has helped his longevity.

One final point, it's a good sign that Barry was happy to renew. I'm sure he could've had a few seasons in the States or China but the fact he's remained indicates he's buying into the 'project'.

Yeah I am one of them.

Substandard is very harsh though. I just don't think he was an ideal fit for the system we were playing.

Pretty pointless ranking him compared to others in the past though. Currently he is one of our better mids which is all that matters. He can be phased out and I totally expect him to be but we cant just get rid either.

...I think it's a very fair point saying he was ideal for the Martinez team model of two DMs who rarely passed the half-way line. Saying that, whilst he might not be the ideal type for RK the fact that he's been a regular on the team sheet reflects what a top footballer he must be.

Or "KOEMAN HATES KIDS!" etc etc...

Harsh, not on Gomes he's a clown. Barry put the ball where Rom could do the damage, if he meant it or not I'm not sure, but I still stand by he's the only one out the trio of midfielders who has the inclination to even try it
The NBC post match analysis showed him looking in Rom's direction about 3 times, one just before he got the ball back, so he knew exactly where Lukaku was and where the defenders were. The first time pass to him was no accident, obviously he isn't always going to be so accurate with the placement but it certainly wasn't a "hit and hope" punt into the danger area.

Happy with his contract extension, one of the worries you often have with extending an older player is that they will be injured just when you need them or will throw their toys out of the pram about their reduced role and neither seems like it will be an issue with Barry.

He's a better version of Tobias Linderoth.

Hope the new contract was to command a fee in summer as he will be rotation by then, we need someone who brings energy and fight not sits deep and does the odd smart pass.

Err, pretty sure he at least brings fight - hence all the cards.

Anyhow I'd bet good money he'll in a regular in the team longer than you will a regular poster on here!

I feel the reason he was dropped against Arsenal was because he wouldn't have been able to keep up the high pressing game. Will probably be back in against Liverpool to show a bit of snide.

Rather than replace a player who's losing qualities daily with age we simply extend his contract? This is why we never progress

Rather than buy younger players who will eventually replace players we have we just let them get older and older and then end up with inadequate panic replacements due to lack of money

Ideally players should be sold once they start getting past their peak and replaced with younger talent.

I don't understand why we have extended his deal when we are apparently aiming for the top four

There's no money to replace him

Same reason gibson was extended. Nothing ever changes and this is a clear sign we won't be going mad in the window. Joke of a club

Everton aren't stupid enough to realise his legs won't last they are simply too tight to spend!

You're a right ray of sunshine mate !
Oh, welcome back btw.
