Gareth Barry yesterday

If the worst comes to the worst and he ends up going off to America (please no) who would you (pheasibly) like to see him replaced with next season?

Hope he'll stick around.
Won't begrudge him taking an uber pay check from NYCFC on his final contract- but if he makes his decision for footballing reasons theres nowhere else he'll be next season but with us

Hope he stays and we then have him and Gibson to play one of the holding roles alongside McCarthy. I would like us to sign Sidwell as back up to McCarthy as he has the energy to get forward as well as a good reader of the game. It was notable yesterday that Barry was telling McCarthy where to go. This type of experience coaching on the pitch is invaluable.

To play the controlled passing game that Martinez wants us to do, we need someone like Barry who knows how to play that way.

All good points but if we signed the likes of barry and the rest up then the average age will suddenly star to grow until we end up like Fulham and we all know where that gets you.

We need to invest properly into the team rather than sign whoever 'used to be good' on a massive contract. There is more chance of Barry losing the ability to play consistently rather than a 25 year old. Neville, although limited really started dropping form at 34 and eventually retired a year later.

I dont get the Distin Comparison, he has had a fantastic career and has proven to be a great signing. Would i want us to sin a 31 year old centre half for 6 million now, no! How many 38 year olds a re running up and down the pitch like he does every week? Even giggs couldnt run as fast as him at 38 and he was known all his career for speed.

We have got lucky on an old player yes, but osman has dropped form, hibbert is not even considered, neville retired after a bad performance showed him up, you see where i am going. For arguments sake you say sign him up (which we are doing btw, not disputing that), what if his knee is taken out on game one of the season, and that leads to his legs going after that? hyperthetical, but it is much harder to recover when you are mid 30's than when you are in the prime of your career.

Thats a terrible slippery-slope argument
Its like saying we shouldn't sign too many youngster else we'll become like Arsenal a few seasons ago and we all know where that gets you
Roberto WANTS senior pros in the squad- he wants Howard here until 39, he gave Distin another contract until 37, and he'll want Barry here until he's the same.
These are the leaders in the squad-
Howard has played in all competitions, captained his country, taken records for consecutive Prem games played
Distin holds the appearance record for non-British outfield players- a superb achievement
Barry has more international and premier league appearances than most other players in the history of the league

Age is arbitrary so long as the ability is there- The same applies to Barkley and Stones etc
Its an easy decision- if we can convince Barry to stay- he must stay.

Definitely joining I reckon. Don't even think of him as a loan player like I do with Deulofeu and Lukaku for some reason.
