He certainly was let down - I mean, he had to contend with Brands, and the best we can say about him was that perhaps he, too, was let down. That's the challenge for DOFs and managers at Everton. They have to be able to rise above the dysfunction around them to earn the right to stay in situ and continue their "project." Lampard is, in all likelihood, going to be the next victim of this because he, too, is unable to climb above the environmental effluent that must be contended with at Goodison.
When you look at the transition from his first season to the second it was certainly external factors and and recruitment that impacted and certainly made us worse, throw in a dollop of bad luck with injuries and we blinked. He’s proving his mettle now enough to suggest, he carried the can way too much here for the circumstances. Was never a Brands fan, always felt there was a facet of the emperors new clothes with him, with little substance in performance.
We’re a curious species, in many ways I think the tail wags the dog at the club in the sense, the club and in particular this regime often react positively or negatively on the reaction of the fans to a manager. It’s a well trodden course, Martinez, Koeman, Allardyce, Silva, Benitez - interestingly despite showing many of the traits of his predecessors and maybe more limits and inexperience - Lampard is being awarded a lot of Lee way, why because he’s popular. I myself want it to work out, but I’m not oblivious either, purely because I think another reboot is undermining, but it’s an example again of the tail wagging of the dog, based of the fickleness of popularity and fan favour and that can turn very quickly - it’s no way to run a club.
