Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

Exeter City vs AFC Fylde

There was an evident link between the two sides with Mark Morton lining up against the team he made 64 appearances for and on the other side was Ryan Reynolds who made 142 appearances for Fylde. Four minutes on the clock and Sam Allaway looked to get onto the long ball inside the area, he was pushed inside the box as the ball came in and the referee gave the penalty. Henderson steps up and sends the ball into the top right corner! Sam Allaway got on the scoresheet six minutes later and doubled Fylde's lead with a poachers finish from six yards out. It got better for Fylde when a trademark Mick Wisdom free-kick rattled the back of the net on 29 minutes to put Fylde ahead by three! Andy Smith was denied from range by Neil Foster who tipped over the bar magnificently. With a few minutes to go in the first half, Ferguson came forward through the centre and squared it for Johnson whose left footed drive was tipped round the post. Exeter came close in the dying moments of the half but Feeney was solid and cleared away the danger. The match was far from over and sheer brilliance from Bughail-Mellor jinxed past the defence pulling one back for Exeter. Johnson was impressive with the ball at his feet coming down the right, he found Allaway on the edge of the box who passed it to Wisdom who joined the attack, Wisdom forward to Henderson who had his shot parried wide! Fylde were passing it around nicely, Johnson got on the ball and wanted to bring it forward, he played it to Henderson who flicked it on for Ferguson! Buried into the bottom corner hard and low! Fylde were playing well but a chance out of nothing came for Bughail-Mellor who turned Lamptey and scored a low shot into the bottom left. Thirteen minutes to go and it was Mick Wisdom taking the free-kick from a scoring position, the keeper got a hand to it but it crept over the line. Fylde getting their fifth of the day. With time running out for Exeter, Fylde just had to keep their nerve for the remaining 7 minutes. Fylde were winning the ball back in their own half and keeping possession well. The whistle blew and Fylde remained on top of League Two with a good win away at Exeter.

DF: We played brilliantly and done well to bounce back after we conceded to keep that cushion. Our heads could have dropped and we could have went under at any moment but we dug in and got the goals. We conceded two sloppy goals but I'm happy with the manner of victory today.

Fylde who are currently in excellent form faced a difficult away trip to Shrewsbury Towwn who found themselves in 18th place going into this fixture. Euan Henderson led the goal scoring charts with five so far this season and was enjoying his football in League Two. It was three minutes on the clock when Henderson cut inside from the left wing and his rolling shot with his right foot fumbled over the line and put Fylde in front! The first half came to an end with little action and little threat from Shrewsbury. Fylde looked comfortable but anything can change with the scoreline still only at 1-0. Morton had control of the ball at the back, no pressure from Shrewsbury to their fans frustration, the long ball played forward to find Allaway who got in behind but his shot was straight at the keeper. Henderson picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box and hit a curling shot towards goal which went over the bar. Henderson was desperate to add to his tally but he couldn't get his shots on target. A dangerous player when he is on the ball but the shots just not going right for him. Fylde looked assured in defence with Feeney and Smith keeping composure. It was another clean sheet for Fylde and a good victory to keep them top of the table in League Two.

DF: I'd say we came here and got the job done. We had other chances but I was very impressed with the defensive display and how well we controlled the game. The players have adapted well to the league and although it's early days I'm pleased with how they are holding their own and playing with confidence.

Where’s the league table? WHERE’S THE LEAGUE TABLE?

As everyone knows, I'm a massive Peter Gabriel fan (I've got Sledgehammer on a picture vinyl) so I've been thinking about a song for Henderson to show him how much I love him and how much we appreciate his continuous scoring exploits.

Gabriel has a song called Beko (if you haven't heard it make sure you youtube it as its quite a complicated chorus)

So change the word Beko for Hendo and we've got one of the most complex songs I think I've penned which goes like

Hendo
Hendo Hendo Hendo
Hendo
Oh Hendo
Hendo Hendo Hendo

AFC Fylde vs Norwich U23's
Checkatrade Trophy
31st August 2027

=Norwich U23's result.webp

It was the start of this season's Checkatrade Trophy and Duncan Ferguson made a number of changes to the side that beat Shrewsbury at the weekend. Chima Okoroji started his first match of the season after returning from injury, Mark Connolly played at centre back. Lamptey, Danny Smith and Paul Townsend all came into the side to aim to stake their case for a regular place. Chima Okoroji wasted no time settling back into the side as he crossed for Townsend to head home after 4 minutes! Danny Smith came inches close when his curling shot went wide of the post a minute later. Fylde were in complete control and could have had a few goals in the first half. Suso came forward down the right for Norwich and crossed early, Lamptey slid in to intercept the ball but put it past Foster and into the net! A mistake from Lamptey and it seemed unlucky to go into his own net. Scott Ricketts found Povey on the outside of the box and his first time shot beat Foster to double the lead for Norwich as the first half was drawing to a close. Lamptey at fault for not getting close to Povey. Norwich turning the game round in quick succession although Fylde have been the much better side. Norwich sat back early in the second half as Fylde came forward. Lamptey was getting forward down the right and having an impact. Smith played the ball to Townsend who had his back to goal and he played it back to Smith who tried a low shot towards the bottom left corner and it went in! Fylde back level! 55 minutes on the clock, Wisdom crossed into the box, O'Neill won the header and flicked it on to the back post, Townsend was there to poke it home! Fylde back in front! Tyrone O'Neill was fighting for his place in the side after being subjected to the bench recently, he came forward down the left and cut inside, his shot was narrowly wide which would have give Fylde some daylight. Danny Smith swung the corner into the area, Townsend went up for the header but was charged in the back. The referee gave the penalty! Townsend sent the ball down the middle but it was saved by Crook! The rebound fell to Townsend who slotted it into the bottom corner getting his hat-trick! Foster made a fantastic save with five minutes to go from Ricketts who blasted from close range and the keeper pushed it away! Paul Townsend had a fantastic game and surely puts his name on the team sheet for Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend.

AFC Fylde vs Wycombe Wanderers
4th September 2027

=wycombe result.webp

Paul Townsend started up front after bagging a hat-trick against Norwich Under 23's during the week. Wycombe started well keeping the ball in the Fylde half, McGhee found Clarke in spacwe who hit a left footed driven effort into the bottom corner to give Wycombe the lead. Fylde certainly must wake up and realise they are in a game. Ferguson's words echoed around Mill Farm and Bret McGavin's curling shot on fifteen minutes went inches wide. Henderson picked up the ball and ran forward, he switched it to Johnson who powered through the centre and unleashed a right footed shot into the top corner with venom! Fylde got back in the match! Henderson and Johnson were linking up well together, this time Henderson got away a low shot but the keeper turned it round the post for a corner. Paul Townsend was having a poor first half and it was surprising to see him back out for the restart. Four minutes into the second half and Feeney's terrible touch allows McGhee to run forward with the ball, Feeney tracked back and won the ball back briliiantly, he launched it forward for Townsend but the striker didn't challenge for the header leaving Ferguson furious on the touchline. O'Neill was told to get changed and replaced Townsend on the 50 minute mark. Morton took the throw-in deep in the opposition half, Josh Ferguson nodded it back to him and Morton put in a cross for O'Neill who rose above the defence and glanced the header into the top corner. Fylde in front! Fylde almost made it three when Morton crossed from the byline for Ferguson to head but the keeper claimed the ball well. Twelve minutes to go and Feeney played the free-kick short to McGavin who passed to Wisdom, Wisdom played it forward to Henderson who turned and struck it magnificently with his right foot into the top corner! That surely must seal it for Fylde! The defence kept the ball out well and secured another victory for The Coasters!

LEAGUE TABLE

league table after 8.webp

Fylde have made an impressive start to life in League Two winning seven out of eight games and still being unbeaten. Duncan Ferguson's side have showed determination to come from behind to see off Wycombe in their last match and this can only bode well for the future of AFC Fylde in the Football League.
