Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

Hartlepool result.webp

Danny Smith kept his place in the starting line-up after an excellent performance a few nights earlier with a trip to Hartlepool on Good Friday. McCann and McGavin returned to the midfield. With the first goal coming on the stroke of half-time, it made for a tense atmosphere as Hartlepool took the lead, Warren Cotton scoring a free-kick over the wall and Griffiths was rooted to the spot. Ferguson lost his cool on the touchline after a mediocre display in this first half for The Coasters. Stern words must have been said because Fylde came out for the second half and instantly picked up the tempo, Danny Smith having a shot just go slightly over the cross bar. The winger looking leggy and was substituted a few minutes later for Wright-Phillips, Ferguson applauding his 5'2 winger. The change paid off and Wright-Phillips got the equaliser, Henderson supplying the ball for his team-mate who controlled it on the run on his chest and tapped it through the arms of the keeper but it was almost cleared off the line. A much needed equaliser and words of encouragement from the manager on the touchline. The game almost changed as Hartlepool had a rare attack, McGowan missing a sitter with a header and the reaction from the player said it all, that was the chance. Griffiths restarted with the goal kick long upfield, McCann playing it to Wright-Phillips who crossed across the floor for O'Neill to strike home, 2-1! Fylde turn it round! Wright-Phillips lost the ball on the edge of the box but it fell to McCann who fed O'Neill, O'Neill taking it on his right and curling it past the keeper, a much needed cushion for The Coasters who are starting to look very comfortable. Fylde didn't stop there and deep into stoppage time Henderson found the head of Wright-Phillips who headed it into the ground and it bounced over the keeper into the corner. Wright-Phillips finished it off with another goal in the 97 minute, Henderson's free-kick was cleared but only to the edge of the box, Wright-Phillips launched his right foot through the ball and it rolled into the back of the net. 5-1 and Fylde looking like they are challengers for a play-off spot! A complete and utter rout for The Coasters!

DF: Exactly the reaction I was after, 10 goals in 2 games and to win away at Hartlepool like that is a great result. We have 5 games to go now and we have to keep up this level of performance.

Five games remaining in the National League and it's Fylde who take control of 7th place! A remarkable achievement!
With Salford, Dover and Tranmere all with a game in hand, things can easily change. Fylde are next up against Salford City in a must win game for both sides.

FYLDE EDGE CLOSER

salford result.webp

A tense start at Moor Lane between the sides vying for a play-off place; the deadlock being finally broken from a corner towards the end of the first half. The ball played to the back post for O'Neill to knock back for Ashley Hammond who planted it into the back of the net from 12 yards. Hammond got his second when he took the ball forward towards the edge of the 18 yard box and unleashed one with his left foot with the ball sailing past Ryan Schofield who got down too late. Fylde almost comfortable until Lamptey was holding back Robbie Mckenzie inside the penalty area after the Salford free-kick was whipped in, the referee giving the penalty for the infringement. Andresson stepped up and sent the ball straight down the middle from the spot to put Salford back in the game. Fylde refused to give in and Ashley Hammond was instrumental in the build-up to the third goal playing a fine long ball out wide to Wright-Phillips who cut the ball back inside to Hammond who picked out Henderson who then took a shot on his right foot after composing himself to make it 3-1 to the visitors. A stand out performance from Ashley Hammond who is on loan from Bolton. The midfielder has slotted into the side very well. A routine victory for Fylde who are kicking on in the National League this season and beginning to look like a team who could cement that last play-off place.

DF: We're taking it one game at a time and making sure we are at our best every match day. To get the away win over a competitive side is very pleasing and we are getting closer with each game. We can't afford complacency to kick in, we have to keep going with the same intensity.

DULWICH HAMLET SECURE SURVIVAL

DULWICH HAMLET SCORE.webp

Fylde fans will be shaking their heads with disbelief after losing what seemed to be a certain win in the eyes of many. Dulwich Hamlet set out with a defensive 4-3-3 formation and looked to contain Fylde but Henderson had a run through on goal in the 12th minute but his light effort shot was enough for the keeper to save comfortably. Fylde were looking favourites to break the desdlock and on 30 minutes Lamptey's corner was aimed for O'Neill who put it back across for Wright-Phillips to nod in, the flag was raised immediately but the decision could have been wrong. Wright-Phillips looked onside. It was turning out to be one of those days for Fylde who could not break the deadlock, Hamlet became more adventurous late on in the game, having a header tipped wide of the post on 77 minutes. The goal came with 5 minutes left to play, again the ball being crossed in and Lyons-Foster getting amongst the defence and planting the ball into the net. Fylde had nothing in return and a result which can see their recent hard work to climb the table undone.

LEAGUE TABLE AFTER 43.webp

Dulwich Hamlet secure their National League status for the next season after beating Fylde at Mill Farm unexpectedly. Fylde still occupy 7th place but Dover are due to visit Prenton Park in a game where one team can leapfrog Fylde into 7th place and take it out of their hands.

TRANMERE ROVERS VS DOVER ATHLETIC

Tranmere vs Dover.webp

Dover denied Tranmere the win with both sides claiming a point. Fylde remain in 7th, a point ahead of both teams. The next visitors to Dover are Fylde in four days time. Duncan Ferguson had this to say to the Non league football paper:

DF: It's all or nothing on Saturday, Dover grabbed a point against a strong Tranmere side and we have to go there on our best game. Neil Aspin is doing a very good job and he knows what this fixture means to both of us.

It is make or break for AFC Fylde this weekend.

FYLDE FALTER

dover result.png

Fylde started brightly with three shot on target in the opening fifteen minutes. O'Neill coming close with a header but Mitch Walker in goal made some good saves to deny Fylde. Umerah managed to slot past Griffiths a minute later against the run of play, the start Fylde did not expect and they seemed to not recover from going a goal down. Wright-Phillips hit the cross bar in the second half which was the best chance Fylde had and the attacking quartet of Henderson, Wright-Phillips, Ginnelly and O'Neill could not do enough to put the ball in the back of the net. An off day for the attacking players and a day of many misplaced passes kept Dover in the lead. With Ferguson throwing everything at it in the final ten minutes, there was no breakthrough and with Dover and Tranmere both picking up wins, it is now down to them to drop points in the final two games if Fylde are to have any chance.

Duncan Ferguson was unavailable for comment after the game.

YORK VS DOVER.webp

A tricky away tie for Fylde but they really cannot afford to lose three games on the spin. York will be looking to cement their play-off place and will make it tough for Dover.
