Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

Everton Centre Back Dave Watson has been confirmed as the Everton manager in a Player/Manager role for the 1998/99 season. Watson has signed a 2 year managerial contract expiring in June 2000. He takes over from previous manager Howard Kendall and will be looking to rebuild the club to bring back the glory days of what was just over ten years ago. Everton's recent success comes just three years ago beating Manchester United 1-0 to lift their fifth F.A Cup. Everton were keen to bring in an experienced manager with Walter Smith the favourite for the job before Dave Watson threw his hat in the ring and chairman Peter Johnson went with the inexperienced option. Dave briefly met the media on his way to Bellefield this morning.

DW: It's a massive honour to take the reigns of the club I've been with for the last ten years and enjoying success with them as a player. I want to take them forward now as a manager and compete at the top end of the table once again. We have a really talented quad with John Collins, Oliver Dacourt, David Weir and Marco Materazzi all joining the club. Young talent like Franny Jeffers, Michael Ball and Leon Osman all starting to edge towards first team football. We are keen to be active in the transfer market too and will be looking at options to build this squad.
