Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

GRIFFITHS: Fylde will not be promoted

Ahead of Forest Green Rovers vs AFC Fylde, goalkeeper Russell Griffiths caught up with BT Sport

BT: Russell, you left Fylde in unexplained circumstances, you were their number 1 goalkeeper, seemed happy at the club and had been there through many highs and lows. What happened?

RG: I loved my time at Fylde, the club is great, the fans are great and we experienced so much together. I think the club lost it's way initially when they first parted ways with Duncan and under the regime of Barton it was difficult. We were heading back down to the National League and I believe Ferguson may have got a tune out of us.

BT: Surely you were happy under Ferguson in his second spell in charge? It looked like glory days were back on the horizon, he almost got play-offs after the awful season had by Barton and Kewell.

RG: I have a lot of respect for Ferguson but I just believed Fylde could not match my ambition. We done remarkably well year in year out getting into the play-offs but we were always second best. There are better teams dropping down like Carlisle United and I believe they will be too strong. The league is great, I love the competitiveness of it but I feel Fylde will be a team that could possibly fall away.

BT: interesting comments ahead of your sides game against Fylde this weekend. Are you nervous?

RG: Of course, they are a top side and will always play good football, however they do have the......potential, let's say....to slip away. They have been the best team in the league this season but I feel they may run out of steam early on.

Russell Griffiths was speaking to BT Sport ahead of his game against former club AFC Fylde.

I AM READY TO ATTACK

If I was big dunc I’d pin that interview onto the dressing room wall.
No. Teamtalk. Needed.
Might need to read it out slowly to Tyrone O’Neil mind. He’s not the sharpest tool in the box.

Your "ambition" you massive steaming pile of turd was to have threesomes with the elder ladies down at the bingo. EVERYONE knew it, especially after you started chatting up Pat (Mad Micks nan) and she told Mad Mick so we all knew you were gonna have to do a Ross Barkley and scarper pronto you massive flump headed Bellend.

Just you wait until Saturday, I've saved some old 5p pieces to launch at yer massive flump shaped head yer scruffy granny banger!
There's an old lady who's sure
All that is Griffiths is gold
And she's buying a stannah stairway to Heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Oh oh oh oh and she's buying a stannah stairway to Griffiths

If there's a Russel in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the oap queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder

Dirty bustard.

Be boss if Stannah stair lifts came out with that for an advert

"and she's buying a Stannah to heaven"

Edit - in no way am I condoning that Stannah stair lifts can take you direct to heaven or that it means you want to get to heaven earlier than planned.

As much as I detest Griffiths *spit He has a point. Deadpool is an excellent ‘thinking mans’ super hero romp. Okoroji’s latest performance in the ‘some mother’s do ave em’ Fylde amateur theatre production got 2 stars at best from me. Was nice to see Danny Rowe there though, putting in an excellent shift as Betty.

You don't get pathos like that without living a hard life. Danny Rowe knows the dark places. But he keeps on going.

For me, he's Fylde personified.

Forest Green Rovers vs AFC Fylde

A tense atmosphere at The New Lawn in the build up to kick off for the visit of AFC Fylde. Josh Ferguson missed out with a knee injury sustained in mid-week against Tranmere so it was a midfield two of Wisdom and McGavin. The return of Russell Griffiths grabbed the headlines as the goalkeeper released stories to BT Sports and Sky Sports prior to this fixture. Boo's rang out for Griffiths from the away following, however he was defending from the home end in the first half. Forest Green had the first chance of the match when Howard headed West's corner just over the bar but it seemed Hadler had it covered. Early on it was all Forest Green and on 6 minutes Hancock's effort was saved onto the post by Hadler and West followed it up to make it 1-0 to Forest Green. After a few seconds delay the assistant referee flagged for offside however it looked very dubious. Forest Green furious with the officials and a much needed wake-up call for Fylde. Hancock was proving to be a danger to Fylde and curled in a free-kick on 19 minutes around the wall that beat Hadler and this time made it 1-0 to Forest Green. Fylde not in this game at all at this point. Forest Green sent in a free kick on 35 minutes but Lamptey volleyed clear up the pitch, the chase was on with Day and O'Neill, Day miss-timed the header and put O'Neill through on goal! Bartlett came across to win the ball with a sliding challenge on O'Neill who broke into the area but he was late! No other choice! Penalty! The chance for Fylde to level this game and get back into it. Euan Henderson picked up the ball, the regular taker for Fylde was having words with Griffiths before putting the ball down. Henderson went straight down the middle and Griffiths saved with his feet! Henderson missed! The game continues with Forest Green clearing the ball and the Forest Green fans celebrating like the game is over. What a first half dominated by Forest Green and Fylde looking completely shook up by the first half action. The second half started with Griffiths confidently walking over to the Fylde fans behind that goal and abuse being directed his way, Griffiths appearing to laugh it off only riled the Fylde fans further. Forest Green stretched the pitch getting the ball out wide, West received it on the edge of the box, playing it back in towards Whitehall who got in front of Feeney and slotted past Hadler, making this day worse for Fylde. A terrible afternoon continued when MacDonald lost possession, Forest Green came forward but Hadler managed to turn the ball around the post. Kian Robinson and Danny Smith came on to bolster the attack but frustration grew for Fylde, Forest Green in great shape and had enough to keep a clean sheet against a very poor and embarrassing performance from The Coasters.

Duncan Ferguson was unavailable for comment after the game.

AFC Fylde vs Wrexham

=wrexham result.webp

After the shock result to Forest Green, Fylde had time to get work in on the training ground ahead of their match against promotion rivals Wrexham. Sam Allaway was the talk of the National League this season with the goals he was scoring and he stunned the home crowd with a instinctive strikers finish into the bottom corner to give Wrexham the lead and pile on the problems for Fylde. In first half injury time Josh Ferguson felt he was brought down in the box but the ball was won fairly. Duncan Ferguson roaring at Josh Ferguson telling him to get on to his feet. Fylde looking on a downward spiral as of late and something needs to change to get out of this rut they are embarking on. Kian Robinson almost equalised after Smith crossed was encouraging for Fylde and the home support drove them forward, Henderson picked up on the loose ball in the Wrexham half and got it forward to O'Neill who hit it nicely on the sidefoot past the keeper to put Fyle back in with a chance. Paul Townsend got in from behind and almost made it 2-1 after 80 minutes when his shot was saved onto the post. Wrexham had the last chance of the game but Hadler caught hold of the cross and Fylde came away with a draw.

DF: We're in a bit of a blip and it's my job to keep their heads during this period. It happens to every team on a good run and we've bounced back from them before stronger so we need to replicate that this season.

17 year old promising striker Lee Lofthouse has joined Ashton United on loan in the Vanarama North Division for the rest of the season. The striker made two appearances for Fylde last season as a 16 year old and Ferguson states the player has a bright future in front of him. He has been prolific in front of goal for Fylde U18's and a loan will be the beneficial next step in his development.

Maidstone vs AFC Fylde
6th December 2025

=maidstone result.webp

When things couldn't get any worse, Maidstone took the lead after 35 minutes when Greengrass headed across goal and the ball rolled against the post, nobody reacted and Hadler left the ball for Wilkie to poke home, abysmal from Fylde and we are beginning to think if they have given up. Josh Ferguson played in Danny Smith with one minute remaining in the first half, Smith used his trickery to go past the defenders but Ridgewell pulled him down giving away a penalty, Fylde in with a chance to change the course of the game. Henderson grabbed the ball, he was looking to put his mistake against Forest Green straight. Henderson put it the left but Jinado in goal guessed right and pushed it away! Another miss for Henderson! Fylde went into the dressing room, heads hanging low, looking totally bereft of confidence. 54 minutes on the clock and Lamptey broke up a Maidstne attack, played the ball forward quickly to Danny Smith, Smith lost possession and it came back to Hadler in goal. Hadler kicked it upfield for O'Neill, he played it on for Ferguson, Ferguson tried a hopwful shot which took a deflection..goal. Fylde equalise! But it was short-lived and Pressley managed to beat Hadler two minutes later from close range, Maidstone go 2-1 up. Euan Henderson was replaced by De'marlio Sterling after the winger had a poor game. Sterling crossed into the box from the corner, Feeney headed the ball towards the near post and there was Smith who knocked it in! What a game this is turning out to be! Maidstone turned up the heat on Fylde in the last ten minutes but Fylde held firm, with seconds left on the clock, Maidstone won a free kick 20 yards out, Davies hits the free kick towards the top corner, Hadler saves! Ridgewell gets to the ball first and puts it across for Pressley who knocks it in! That's the winner. A deflating blow for Fylde in the last second. If their confidence hadn't taken a hit, it has now.

Leyton Orient vs AFC Fylde
13th December 2025

=orient result.webp

It was the return fixture, the previous game ended in a 3-2 victory for Fylde on the first day of the season. Fylde were in desperate need of a victory with York City, Carlisle United and Wrexham all closing the gap on the leaders and Carlisle in devastating form. Good news for Fylde was Mark Connolly was back in the side after 4 weeks out and Fylde have been particularly solid with him and Feeney at the back. The first half had chances but they were from way out or did not challenge the goal keeper, the first proper chance of the half came two minutes before the end, Orient's Song seen Johnson out on the left flank in acres of space, Johnson played it to Hamilton whose rocket of a shot was too much for Hadler and it put Orient up before the interval. Fylde had a chance to get back into the game on 63 minutes, Mick Wisdom's free kick fell to Josh Ferguson who slotted pas the keeper but the flag was raised on the far side. Fylde were looking for that equaliser, Hadler's goal kick found Paul Townsend, Townsend had Wright-Phillips over on the overlap, Wright-Phillips crossed low for O'Neill, his shot was blocked, Henderson from 5 yards out...1-1! Can Fylde turn this game around whilst they have the momentum. Leyton Orient with a corner, crossed into the far post but the whistle had gone, the referee pointed to the spot! Wright-Phillips is the player the official went over to talk to but nobody knows why! It didn't seem like there was anything untoward when the ball came over. Sam Magri came on for Orient for Mercer to take the spot kick, Magri jinxed on his run up and sent Hadler the wrong way, 2-1 to Orient. Fylde had a chance to equalise, Wisdom's free kick into the box found Wright-Phillips but he could only head over the bar. Another defeat for Fylde and this run of form could have a detrimental effect on their season.

DF: We are being doe over with unfair decisions, how was that a penalty? I've seen the replay and there was nothing wrong with it at all, Wright-Phillips jumped for the ball, his arms were not obstructing the man, how was that a penalty? What did he do? It's wrongful decisions like this that is costing us points in this league!

Ferguson very unhappy with the officiating in the match but his team's performance was also not up to standard.

Fylde have slipped down the table into 4th place. As we are past the half-way mark of the season, results must improve or they risk undoing all their hard work in the first half of the campaign. Carlisle United have come on strong winning their last three games beating Wrexham, Blackpool and Newport County. It's not quite over for Fylde but they need a consistent run of victories otherwise if they continue on this downward spiral, they could be fighting to make the play-offs come April.
