Formation

We setup the way we did because we dont have a lot of options on the bench, with two first pick seniors out we had to chance something. And I have ridiculed and derided Heitinga more than my fair share but today we saw some sneaky clever defending and some real skithouse tactics from him and it worked very nicely thankyou.
The point in the match I knew we had them was where Shawcross was trying to have a go at Mirallas (after having a try with Jela) and both Anichebe and then Jela were onto him like a flash - love that supporting the teammates stuff - really shows they give a toss.
Stoke turned up and tried to lock the game down from the off like Swansea did a month and a half ago, if they could pass the ball like they can foul and spoil they would be title contenders but their second to final ball was bad making their final ball almost non existent.
Actually felt sorry for them regarding the referee until about the 80th minute where he just suddenly became very against us. Always hated that pricktard.
Funny seeing Pulis do his thunderbirds puppet impression again and moaning. Great goal Mirallas, last time we saw that type of thing was Beckford, and before that AJ and then before him Radz or Bent. Looking at the timeline of those players Everton careers it is awfully telling that speed merchants rarely come to us let alone make any sort of impact. Hope Mirallas is the turn in that regard.
So yeah, the formation. We put as many able bodied experienced players on the pitch to help make up for the lack of Fellaini being in the mix to mop up headers from their inevitable set piece threats.

With the personnel that were available today, the formation was worth a shot but the game did kind of bypass Ossie/Gibbo. With it pretty much guaranteed that Fellaini is gone in the summer, this formation could be the catalyst to build the team around Mirallas (not Merellis as John Barnes kept calling him) and with practise could make the most of our best assets including Baines/Coleman and their electric pace..

Look at it this way without that formation and playing the 3 CBs I would imagine that Neville would have been on the pitch possibly at RB with Coleman pushed forward.

We weren't great but it helped to neuter their style of play as well as ours and we came off best.

Next week different style required to take the game to spurs. The games against Arsenal and Chelsea will be more important.

I wouldn't want us to play this formation often, but Moyes got it right today.

By playing 3 centre backs we nullified Stoke's ability to counter attack, because when they hit it long, we had an extra man to cover/clean up - and in the first half it worked really well.

In the second we clearly struggled to deal with Stoke's intensity, but all-in-all, the formation worked, so credit where it's due.

you live and you learn . its only by trying these things is whether you learn they work but you can't expect to try a new system and it to be perfect . but for me . at least he tried something different . we can all pick different teams but it takes time for systems to gel. normally you canpredict the normal Moyes cautious tactics . least he tried something different

For the first time in a long time in his post match interview he spoke in a positive way about him and we and us rather than them and the boys etc; If Gordon Clegg gives him the transfer kitty then I think there's a very good chance he'll stay and give it a good tilt over the next few years...

Agree on this mate, I liked when Anichebe supported Barkley after that bull**** booking too and helped calm him down. Seems like the team chemistry is in a very good place at the moment, and a gritty win like today can only improve that.

We don't have the midfield players to run this system. But the point is Stoke don't have the midfield players to exploit it either.

I thought it was interesting, but we won't see it again anytime soon.

It was a mess of a formation but it worked and we won, that's all I'm bothered about. Just hope we have more of a structure against Spurs

We where shocking like but a couple of points regarding the change

Kudos to moyes for trying something new really happy about that

Dropped Phil Neville

Played players in there correct position

Might of being a dull game but the changes were heartening

Wasn't too taken with it myself, but fair play to Moyes for trying something different to win today. I can't see us using it against Spurs because Bale will have a field day with the space behind the full back.

With a fully fit squad and no bans, would it be something like this...?

--------------------------------------------------Howard
--------------------------------Heitinga----------Jags----------Distin
----------------Coleman----------------------------------------------------Baines
-------------------------------------Fellaini--------------Gibson
------------------------------------------------Mirallas
---------------------------------Anichebe----------------------Jelavic

I think that Wigan and City both using the system against us gave Moyes food for thought. We've got tough away games against Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea coming up and he possibly wanted to see how it suited us before we go in to those matches. It should be a good fit defensively, but we'll have to see if it hampers our attack. We should only need one midfield anchor if we're using three centrebacks, so the lineup might look like:

_______________Howard
_______Heitinga Jagielka Distin
Coleman___________________ Baines
_______________Gibson
________Mirallas Fellaini Pienaar
_______________Jelavic
