The premier league seems to be doing a bit of investigation into flares / smoke bombs at the moment. I received an email from their fan panel thing asking me to complete a survey. Nearly all the questions were about flares n smoke, seemed to be asking if people thought they were too dangerous and ruined / helped the atmosphere.

Hardly think Celtic & Rangers fans are the best in the world.

Haaaa, Celtic fans seem to think they are the best supporters in the world.

Rangers fans in Manchester and Celtic fans and their "No Poppy on our Hoops" campaign. Aye, great fans.

I have been to a few Old Firm games. The games 25 years ago where the 1RA campaign was in full swing were verging on war. These days they are quite tame, but probably for the best.

Linesman at the Villa vs Spurs game just been hit by a flare after Spurs scored. Luckily the fella is okay and able to carry on.

Getting closer and closer to there being a serious injury though. Sooner or later, someone will get hurt and then there'll be hell to pay (points docked? away fans banned?).

Given we're playing Villa away on Saturday, might be a good idea for the Everton lids to leave the flares at home for this one. Security will be well stepped-up at Villa now.

Like it or not, it's big news. Already got it's own story on the BBC site:

Linesman hit by flare during Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur game

Assistant referee David Bryan was hit by a flare thrown from the crowd during Aston Villa's game with Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park on Sunday.
Bryan was struck on the back of the neck moments after Andros Townsend gave Spurs the lead in the first half.
He was able to continue without treatment, though smoke from the flare delayed the restart of the game.
In May, a 15-year-old boy suffered lung damage from a smoke bomb thrown during Villa's game at Wigan.
The boy needed hospital treatment, while two women, aged 22 and 24, also required attention for the affects of the device lit during the 2-2 draw.
In August, Policing Minister Damian Green warned that fans who smuggled flares and smoke bombs into games were putting the lives of other supporters at risk.
The Government's warning over the devices said they could burn as hot as 1,600 degrees Celsius for as long as an hour.

where do these flares come from? are there ships out there that are flareless because someone's chucking them on a footy pitch?
