...not so sure Holgate ‘benefited’ from his loan, I think it was more a great example of a professional seizing an unlikely opportunity when it arose.

I have it in mind that Osman and Barkley are the only Academy players who’ve played more than 50 games for us after going on loan and both of those had major injuries at a key stage in their development.

i think the manager wants to use his best players regardless of age, which is why Gordon isn’t at Watford.

Coleman won promotion with Blackpool. He came back twice the player.

Fair enough. But he did get 20 senior games on loan which he wouldn’t have had at Everton if he stayed. Of course if they’re good enough for the first team, keep them. If they won’t be playing, no issue with loaning them out, taking a small fee and hoping they kick on.

....loans are fine but not for our best youngsters.

Couldn't disagree more. Any player we have with potential should be either in our first team playing regularly (which they are rarely ready for) or out on loan the moment they turn 18. The U23s are a wasteland.

...don’t disagree about the U23s, much prefer a Central League. In recent times we’ve literally sent loads of Academy players on loan, can you list the ones that have gone on to careers with us? I reckon the answer is none (since Barkley and Osman).

Indeed, many go backwards and become expensive millstones (Connolly, Pennington, Galloway, Garbutt et al). Regardless, this isn’t the thread for this discussion.

Just not good enough for PL. Most of them.

Every player should have their own development path mapped out, some players will benefit from a loan and some won't. There isn't a one size fits all strategy for youth development.

That would be a great point if loads of players since Osman and Barkley had come through the academy and had a career with us after not going on loan. As they haven't though, it isn't.
