FIFA and future World Cup allocations

Isn't that the Club World Cup or the UEFA Champions League?

Or do we still pretend that national sides are better than club sides? I see you're argument, but I'm going to agree with @Mikey_Fitzgerald here - the World Cup isn't about quality football, it's about seeing all of the national cultures come together in a generally agreeable celebratory fashion. It's supposed to be a big world party with some football thrown on the end.

The best team in the world is almost certainly one of Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, or Bayern Munich any given year. They would utterly butcher any national team.

I like to see the best players in the world have to carry a squad when they aren't surrounded with the best players in the world. If someone like Messi wants to prove that he's not just great but that he's the best of all time then get out of your Barca bubble and go win a world cup with Funes Mori.

I wasn't arguing against the WC as spectacle. I was just saying that the desire to have more S. American teams in it at the expense of Asian teams due to the quality of the teams didn't make sense to me.

You don't watch the WC for the high-quality football. You watch for the spectacle.

It was really just picking out the specific phrase "I want to see the best teams in the world" and suggesting that the WC isn't the venue to do that. It's still good fun, so long as no Everton players are harmed.

So this 48 team thing is actually happening? Can't wait for Uzbekistan - El Salvador.
They said the same about Cameroon and Roger Mila

North Korea eh wtf were they doing in the finals...one of the best games ever seen at Goodison.
Northern Ireland with a 16 year old in the team
Plus no doubt, many others I can't think of at the moment
Brazil getting 7 put on them
It's a funny old game you just never can tell which teams will do stuff

CONMEBOL is pretty tough. Probably should have 7 play CONCACAF's 6 for a spot.

It's not like CONMEBOL is rife with a bunch of small fish. Yeah, Venezuela is moribund at the moment, but it's not like, oh, UEFA. 21 teams have zero or one win 5 games into the group stages.

Would folks feel better if French Guiana, Guyana & Suriname got to compete? Maybe Easter Island could field a team to pad the ranks?

Not against the 48-team format, but giving the extra places to Asia and CONCACAF instead of Europe and South America is crazy.

The last Asian or CONCACAF team in the field will probably be worse than the best South American or European team left out.

I can't stand FIFA, I don't think I've ever disliked any bunch of Glitterati so much except for maybe the fox hunting establishment.
When Yaya Toure was racially abused in Russia and all's they did was close part of the ground it said all you need to know about them.
Racist condoning money grabbing thieves, the 'kin lot of them.

Cause even teams that are qualifying now from those regions often suck (Trinidad and Tobaco, Honduras, North Korea, Saudi Arabia), and even the best ones (Japan, Australia, USA and Mexico) are not that great.

And now we will have Uzbekistans, Omans, Nicaraguas and Jamaicas instead of teams like Bosnia or Paraguay who atleast wouldn't be the obvious outsiders.

So because they are currently at a lower level, we should ensure they stay there by not giving them the opportunity to play against better teams? I know it is hard to understand for those coming from an established football country, but the excitement and interest that World cup qualification generates in places like Australia can not be matched by anything else. Tim Cahill is possibly the most famous sportsman in Australia at the moment, and it's all on the back of WC qualification.

And let's face it, no matter whether it is Bosnia and Paraguay or Oman and Jamaica, Germany are still going to win it.

If they want to qualify and show the world that they are progressing as a footballing nation they just have to beat Japan or the US, not an impossible task by any means. It's not like they have to beat Germany/Italy/Brazil/Argentina.

Cahill's Australia had to beat Uruguay in the play-offs when they first did it from the OFC. They were a strong team at the time, and they showed it at the World Cup too. Letting in Iran or Canada by making it easier for them is stupid, cause even better teams from their regions currently bring nothing for the WC.

Remember Chile vs Australia in 2014? Chile was head and shoulders above the Aussies and that was a second rate nation from SA against the team that won the Asian Cup (or whatever it's called) like half a year later in January 2015.

Plus the fact that it's a worldwide competition, watched from every corner in the world and for the neutrals a game like Ecuador - Serbia will be more engaging than Jamaica - Iraq, just because the footballing standard will be a bit higher.

Granted,it is arguably the hardest confederation to qualify from but I believe the allocation of 6 spots is too many for the South Americans.
If FIFA had to change anything due to more teams in the world cup which I think is a step too far. Then have the top 5 qualify and no inter confederation playoff.
The way it stands now is just about right, but I guess the money men at FIFA headquarters must be short of a quid or two.

I like the current set up, but if we must move to 64 teams and just seed like the NCAA tournament, seeded by some combo of qualification placement and FIFA rankings. The teams that are nothing more than those dozen or so teams with zero wins 5 rounds into UEFA quals are just lambs for the slaughter will be one and done. Will keep the number of games played to six if you go all the way, so no one should be dead leg at the start of their following Prem/BL/La Liga season after doing a summer death march for the WC.
