FIFA and future World Cup allocations

The Argies don't look like they'll be in Russia*, and maybe not Italy either. If you lose, you lose, but I'm not placated by the Uzbeks' chance to qualify. I want to see the best teams in the world, not a uniform distribution of football playing nations from across the world.

*Oh, looks like they can still qualify by beating NZ, so maybe not all is lost yet.
Is right - but I don't mind so much the, with all due respect, no marks, some of them had a good go and put up good performances. The thing that gets me is FIFA then bring in no mark Reffs from these no mark countries.
Take the 'hand of god' as an example; 2 top teams, 114000 people and, again, with all due respect a Tunisian Reff, who was conned hook line and sinker. He must have been the only one who didn't see it in the whole world

You look at the joke Zaire team in the 70s, and you look at the African nations now. Sure, they're not challenging for the WC final just yet, but it's come such a long way.

Similarly, Costa Rica were like some random nation given access to the 90 WC, they topped their group last time out.

Times are changing, you've got to give the lesser regions a chance, not just make it a dead cert for the old boys club.

Snouts back in the trough.

'Fifa reforms over' say departing ethics chiefs Hans-Joachim Eckert & Cornel Borbely

Fifa's decision not to re-appoint ethics chiefs Hans-Joachim Eckert and Cornel Borbely means an effective end to the reform process, the pair say.

Swiss investigator Borbely and German judge Eckert were not named among those proposed for the next four-year term of the independent Ethics Committee.

Borbely and Eckert have combined to ban numerous football officials.

A statement from the pair said their impending departure "means the de facto end of Fifa's reform efforts".

They suggested the decision by world football's governing body was "obviously politically motivated" and added: "It seems the Fifa hierarchy has valued its own and political interests higher than the long-term interests of Fifa."

Borbely and Eckert will be replaced by Colombian prosecutor Maria Claudia Rojas and Greek judge Vassilios Skouris.

The Fifa Council decisions were announced in Bahrain on Tuesday, two days before the 67th Fifa Congress.

Among the other announcements from the council were a decision not to end the bidding process for the 2026 World Cup by handing it to the joint North American bid from Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Rivals from other confederations only have until August to declare their intention to bid.

It was also confirmed that London will host of the Best Fifa Football Awards 2017 on 23 October, and that the ban on Iraq being able to play matches has been lifted.

Fifa was hoping to continue efforts to distance itself from a series of damaging corruption scandals in recent years at this week's annual congress in Bahrain - but its leading officials have decided that Borbely and Eckert are surplus to requirements.

The two ethics committee chiefs - who banned the former president Sepp Blatter and a host of other executives - wanted to stay on past their current mandate, but will now be replaced.

They also investigated but cleared Fifa's current president Gianni Infantino last year over the alleged misuse of private jets.

In a statement the pair said the decision to remove them "jeopardised" the future of the game.

They have now flown to Bahrain and will speak publicly on Wednesday in a dramatic move that threatens to undermine Fifa's well-laid plans to push the message here that the days of crisis are long behind them.

Isn't that the Club World Cup or the UEFA Champions League?

Or do we still pretend that national sides are better than club sides? I see you're argument, but I'm going to agree with @Mikey_Fitzgerald here - the World Cup isn't about quality football, it's about seeing all of the national cultures come together in a generally agreeable celebratory fashion. It's supposed to be a big world party with some football thrown on the end.

The best team in the world is almost certainly one of Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, or Bayern Munich any given year. They would utterly butcher any national team.

I think they will expand the tournament to 64 teams eventually. I love the World Cup and the longer the tournament (2 -3 months?), the better.

Sure, I agree with that, but international football is fun and delightful as well. My favorites are the teams in the bottom half that get good support. Maybe a few of the expanded teams would delight in the same manner, but are you getting a better product in the end? If there's any upside, it's replacing group play with what is essentially knockout from the onset.
