Fernandes

Left VDM off as I really can't recall what the supporters were saying about him after a few matches.

I don't even think he got himself in to four matches or so in a row due to fitness issues. He wasn't left off my list on purpose. I basically picked the last four players who've come into the squad.

But as far as Fernandes, he's done no better or no worse than any other players we brought in recently and yet he's still come in for some stick.

It's obvious that it's got to do with more than his playing ability or what he's done on the pitch to date.

And four "very poor" performances Halewood?

Come on, I thought you knew your football a bit better than that.

Other than Arteta, he's been really the only player in midfield that the opposition can't get the ball off of.

Osman? Not a problem, just get physical with him.
Carsley? Just pressure him.
Cahill? He's got to get the ball first before you can take it from him and he hasn't done much of that lately.

I'm surprised you can't see how he creates space for himself and gives himself the time to find that defense splitting pass that so many of our other midfielders are unable to do.

It seems we see different elements in him TX, I look for him off the ball, what back tracking he does throughout the game, how many tackles he commits to, how interested he is and I find him lacking in all aspects. I agree that Moyes will be working on him but IMO he has a lot to do if he is to improve sufficiently to be worth the investment of our meagre resources, funnily enough I think Moyes will ask himself the same question

You simply have to look at his stats since he came back, he has passed to the opposition players more than he has passed to own his team mates. In his 1st 2 games he hardly moved, missed a sitter against blackburn and was that poor sat he was hauled off at half time
So actually Very Poor is being somewhat generous

We cant carry on buying a team of hard working dogs, we need to have different options, Fernandes is a different option, keeps the ball well, doesnt give it away unless hes making a really clever pass. We have Neville and Carsley playing in the midfield but they struggle to keep the ball well or do anything special with it.

Fernandes might not be that workerman-like, but hes got a lot of qualities that the team needs a boosting to. I agree he hasn't really set the world alight yet, but our last few games have had the headlines "ugly win" which means most players arent performing to their best.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that every Everton player's stats over the past three matches haven't looked any better than his.

Wait, I'm not really going out on a limb with that statement now am I?

the defence has been solid though, an but for some reffing howlers aj and vaughan would have secured us extra points.

the midfield is below par at the moment, difficult to pick out any that have excelled. with the disruption it has allowed teams to put two players on arteta and close down the main artery of supply to the forwards.

I think you have gone very much out on a limb, he has been brought in to provide creativity and drive in the midfield. He has failed badly at this, struggling to even pass to his own team mate never mind do the other 2 things. Other players arent in the side to do this yet have done there jobs well. At 8-12m(depending on where you read) i want a midfielder who can at least provide a simple pass never mind being able to create chances.
Add to the fact the lad seems to have an attitude and it doesnt look good for him

Well I'm confident that the return of Pienaar will certainly help in the midfield.

The defense has been solid though. Is that three clean sheets in a row now?

Who would 've thought, at the start of the season, that Pienaar woul dbe the one we'd miss the most during the ACN? Agreed that his return, if he picks up where he left off, will lift the team and help restore some of our cutting edge (and take some of the creative pressure off Arteta).

On topic, Manny has been deeply disappointing so far, but considering how little match practice he had in Spain, I'll wait a while longer before coming to a conclusion. But he's not worth 10 million (and I said so when we "signed" him in the summer) other than on potential.

MickNick and Me? we've always said that the lad is just as good as Arteta.

conspiracy:

were getting him to play badly on purpose. the bad news gets around europe and back to Valencia, who are desperate to get rid of him so are forced to lower the transfer price and we get him on the (fairly) cheap!

however i realy cant see that being the case (nice as it would be) so i just hope his form improves along with his fitness. Pienaars return will hopefully be a huge lift, he will take pressure off Arteta and get manny involved more on the attack. until he is given at least another 4-6 weeks i will reserve judgement, although i will comment that he has been dissapointing would you not all be singing his praises if he scored twice at blackburn and Aj chance went in Vs tottenham? differance a few inches can make..

Well of course Manny isn't playing up to his potential value. That's plain for all to see. However, and I'll use your Pienaar analogy, but if someone said after his first week for us that we could get Pienaar for 2.5M or whatever the agreed upon figure was, many people would have said, "let's wait and see how it turns out" and that "it's too early to tell."

Now Pienaar looks like a steal at 2.5M.

I would say let's give Manny the same time to "prove himself" that Pienaar has had.

I don't have any clue what Valencia values Manny at and I don't have any clue what Moyes values Manny at. We certainly don't know after three matches. That I can tell you.

But it WILL be clear by the end of the season to Moyes what Manny's value is to Everton and if Moyes wants to open the checkbook to make the deal permanent.

It still amazes me that supporters want instant results from a player.

Case in point. Anderson at ManU. He didn't start off too well either... Great player for 'em now.

But at the moment, are we willing to waste a space in midfield for someone who isn't offering much, in the slim hope that he MIGHT produce a 'game winning pass'?

We need Pienaar back in the side, we're [Poor language removed] without him unfortunately
