Might be pessimism but I can't imagine the Times reporting that without it being true. Fellaini has always been one of these players who gives his all for the club but would leave at the drop of a hat for a better opportunity. He has constantly been linked with a move and has made comments to Belgian and French press about moving to a bigger club, playing in the Champions League etc.
Moyes has even acknowledged that Fellaini has one eye on the exits.
It wouldn't surprise me if the discussions over a new contract wouldn't have gone through without such a clause being included. £22m, if true, seems like an offer made by a club who realise they don't have a lot of bargaining power, which is what we don't have with Fellaini, such is his reputation on the pitch and our reputation off (and on) it.
Will be sad to see him go, if and when he does, because he's got that cult hero thing about him as well as being a top class player, but Fellaini at Everton was always destined to be a relationship of convenience. With the ever-increasing gap between the rich clubs and the rest, this is probably going to be how teams like Everton, Newcastle, Spurs etc. manage to grow.
