Allardyce's downfall was that he had us safe well before the end of the season but still chose to serve up that mind numbing football rather than being more expansive. He had the opportunity to show us what a full season under him might look like, and in spite of the short memories on here, he showed us we'd be watching abysmal football every single weekend hence us wanting him out.

And look where we are now.

Yep. Football has changed. 20 years ago the 80+% possession City had yesterday was non-existent, so if your tactics were to defend deep, play counter attack and nick a goal from a set piece it could work.
Now teams can dominate the ball so much more those tactics bring diminishing returns. (Also why Benitez is finished)

Always thought Eddie Howe was a great fit for us, he always wanted his team to dominate the ball and that is the only way to improve.

I fear that we might regret hounding him out for finishing 8th.

We as fans have at times had ludicrously high expectations of players and managers alike.
He took us as far as we were ever going to go with him - 8th. He showed no ambition to go any further by adapting the brand of football that he espouses.

He did his job keeping us up and got paid off, that's it. No regrets whatsoever.

Totally agree.
I felt embarrassed watching that derby match at the complete lack of ambition and the ugly tactics
