You have to pay for Ancestry.co.uk and rightly so. The information has been painstakingly collated - so why should anyone get that kind of service for free?

Because it's their family history. If you ask to see your medical records d'you expect the practice to demand payment for your details?

Legally they can charge. The Data Protection act states that data subjects have a right to see what information is held on them but that Data Users may charge a fee for that privilege. They can also state how much notice they need to make the information available - giving them a chance to change anything that they don't want you to see. As usual the law is an ass.

Well if everyone wanted access to their medical records from the comfort of their own home, I'm fairly sure there will be some fee.

And it's not just their family history - it's records kept by people who are not members of yours or my family.

I don't mind paying. Jesus I drop 500 quid into Everton this year, if I want to feel ripped off I know where to look.

I'm of Irish, English and Dutch ancestory as far as I know. I wouldn't know where to start to look. I tried on the net but the australian gov. only has certain records on there.

when did your family arrive ? a lot of records were destroyed, as is being highlighted at the moment with the 'apology'.

absolute disgrace what our government did with all of those kids, to think that a young kid was shipped over to the other side of the world, seperated from any remaining family they had on arrival, and then used as slave labour by the church, and abused on a regular basis.

the film 'The leaving of Liverpool' first alerted me of what went on, although i know that 9 of my grandads brothers were shipped away and never seen again.

it shouldn't be down to the government of Australia to be apologising, i dont even think it should be Brown. this should come right from the top Her Maj herself should be doing the apologising.
