They thought Perez might get a penalty for a marginal track limit infringement so left Bottas out, but he didnt finish within 5 seconds of Perez anyway.

I still think Merc are making crucial mistakes. Yes, the difference between pitting on lap 19 vs 20 may only seem small, but it can and did turn out to be the decisive factor when the competition is so close. They just need to read the race better.. I, and I'm sure many others immediately saw that they were opening up the chance of getting undercut when Hamilton went round for another lap. Remember that Red bull are usually quicker than Merc at their pitstops too, and had they turned their pitstop around the usual half second or so quicker than Merc then it would have been even more comfortable for Verstappen, so all in all it was just very poor judgement from them.

Another small detail that I previously alluded to but was easy to overlook in the aftermath of the French GP: Bottas's totally lameass defence of his position, didn't cause Verstappen any trouble whatsover and in the final shakeout it could easily be argued that that made the ultimate difference.

I saw that and it made me uneasy, he was defending air. His poor racecraft is showing. He's today's Jarno Trulli

Fairly sure that was the final nail in his Mercedes coffin... he shouldn't have lost the place there, which would have held up Verstappen by one or two seconds. Most likely lost Hamilton the race with that shoddy defense, will not go down well with Toto!

Tbf he did more than Hamilton. He took the inside like to stop being passed under breaking, which means a tighter apex and was done thereafter on a Verstappen taking the racing line with better traction. The only thing he could have done is take his foot off the throttle when blocking the entire corner forcing Max to slam on the anchors and then gone again. I believe people take a dim view of doing this though.

Yeah, defo put up more of a fight than Lewis, even after going to deep into the chicane. Hamilton could have put up more of a fight there imo without risking much. Think he just saw it as futile trying to hold him back, so didn't bother.
