Overall his pace was good, cant really moan about that performance.... it was a solid number 2 drive. He was a lot closer to Hamilton in terms of pace than Perez was to Verstappen.

I agree his pace was competitive, but the thing is he didn't produce his best when it mattered the most. Verstappen managed to put enough pressure on him to make the pass just after the pit stop. It's decisive phases like that where he always fall short.

at the end of lap 7 the race order was BOT/VER/HAM and get when it all shook out in the end, he had been passed by the other two drivers when really he should have been able to hold the lead, thereby dictate the pitstops and give himself every chance of winning the race.

I think the Mercedes was faster than the Red Bull today, so to finish behind one of them wasnot a great result.

Hamilton 1/2 fav now
Max 2/1

everyone else 40-1 or longer

That's quite a big move in Hamilton's favour. Probably as much a result of the progress that Mercedes seem to be making with their car as much as it is of the current points position.

Next time out in Spain is going to tell us a lot. Mercedes usually go very well there.

I think Mercedes have a conundrum next season. Bottas is an ideal number 2 can win races but ultimately allows them to put all their eggs in one basket. If they want to stay that way they will give him another contract. However if they want 2 potential World Champions in the team they will go for George Russell. The problem with that is if Russell is inpatient and wants to win his first World Championship right away you will get all the conflict that came with Rosberg. I personally think they should as it will give him a couple of years to bed in before becoming Verstappen number 1 challenger. It would be amazing if Ferrari and McLaren could get back to best and we could have Leclerc/Sainz and Ricciardo/Norris also challenging.

The scuttlebutt is that Bottas has already been informed that he will be let go for 2022.

Think the problem with that is how long is Russell tied to them for? His Williams contract ends this year, so he's gonna be somewhere else next year. Is he going to wait if Merc sign Lewis & Bottas again? With the reg changes as well, another team could well end up on top.

OK, watched the race highlights..

Damn, what a masterclass from Hamilton. The drive of a world champion at the top of his game - sniff of an opportunity and he grabs it with both hands.

Mercedes pit stops still leave a lot to be desired at this level. Arguably cost Bottas 2nd place today with a 3.3s pit stop. Just half a second faster would have been enough to get him out with enough of a gap to Verstappen to get up to speed. Fine margins are deciding the places at the sharp end.

They need to improve, otherwise it won't be the last time they lose a position through the pitstops.

I think they should get Russell in as although it might cause conflict he will also learn a lot from Hamilton. If someone has word in his ear about it being long game he might be a pliant number 2 initially. However as you say next season it could be a new team being dominant.
