The more I look at it the more I'm inclined to agree with Russell that Bottas did jink to the right which closed the space off.
If you look again at the video in the several frames leadings up to the contact, Bottas' wheels go from being on the dry racing line to having half his wheels on the damp patch. There's also the painted line in the middle of the track that you can easily Bottas move his car firmly towards, more than the natural angle you would take just driving the racing line through the bend.

at 74s here imo Bottas has his car positioned to squeeze the space down rather than taking the bend.

Not really a jink is it? More of a continuous squeeze to make it as difficult as possible but still left a car's width. It would be interesting to see the onboard of Hamilton as he passed a few cars on the outside and I think iirc only Norris gave him a fair bit of space. I know it is different as it was considerably drier but I bet those who passed there were committed and didn't get cold feet part way through. If Bottas kept the squeeze going and they collided then obviously there would only be one person at fault. That said the jink to the left kind of indicates Bottas saw him late and perhaps would have gone further but obviously got the 6th sense that something was alongside at that point.

Yeah exactly. Russell's seen him coming across all the way from the inside to at least the middle of the track, so has kept going right himself. By the time Valteri jinks back left it is too late, as Russell is already on the white line by then and almost immediately spins into him.

Honestly I think Bottas was just pootling along in his own little world, completely oblivious that a car was closing fast behind.

He's a complete waste of a seat.

Bottas was following the dry line, Russell unwisely tried to overtake on the wet side of the track. Bottas still squeezed him a little but squeezing is nothing new in motorsport... seen far worse examples of it over the years. Russell got spooked, over reacted and for second time in a row cost Williams a points finish at Imola.

Happy to see them testing a dual race format. Qualifying on a Friday is a bit weird though. I’m guessing they’ve decided to see if a race on Saturday pulls in more viewers than quali currently does.

I was expecting:

Friday - FP 1 & 2
Saturday - Quali & Sprint race
Sunday - Feature race

I guess they have to fit the F3 and F2 around the weekends schedule though

Great interview with Paddy Lowe.

Said very complementary things about Nigel Mansell. People say that his 1992 title was a walkover, but that car wasn’t the easiest to drive and Mansell absolutely wrung it’s neck to get the most out of it. 40kmh faster than Patrese through Copse corner because he believed the car would stick through the corner.. as Paddy put it, the faster you went the faster you were able to go

Terrible idea imo. Can't see it being worth the risk to take any significant chances, all your doing is increasing the risk of someone having an issue which ruins their Sunday race, so they'll all take it super easy and it'll largely be a procession. Also distance is about half race distance I think, 100 k/m?, but only 3/2/1 pts for top three? What's the point (excuse the pun)?

its worse than that. It means any drivers out of position after Qually can rectify it in the Sprint Race. Means everyone will be in the right speed order with nobody can overtake on the Sunday.

Maybe, but only if they are significantly out of position (eg Lewis/Max near the back), as otherwise I don't think there will be enough of a speed difference to make it worth the risk of damaging the car and making the situation worse. Unless it's a track with OP DRS zones, which it could be tbh as I haven't bothered to check that at the circuits they're testing it at.
