OK, Bottas was great today, but 5th place is disappointing for Hamilton. Should have been at least 3rd, but they completely botched the 2nd half of the race when strategy calls had to be made.

On reflection I think this is probably Bottas's best ever performance in a race. Let's face it in rainy conditions with Verstappen alongslide him most wouldn't have fancied him, but he had Max in his back pocket throughout the race and in the end made it look easy.

I'm hoping next season we can have 4 constructors competing for the title. The other 6 should all be able to get amongst the smaller points. No watching qualifying knowing which team will fill the back row. In an ideal world I'd like to see 6 engine manufacturers 12 teams and 24 drivers. I can't see that happening if I'm honest but would be more exciting.

looks like you may have 5 come 2026. I can't ever remember having 4 competing for the title?

No it will be a big ask. There was a time not so long there was 3 and Lotus were getting close but ran out of money and Mercedes starting working on the new hybrid engines do that was nearly 5.

OK, we've reached the business end of the season. It's time to put up or shut up.

Mercedes appear to have the package to seal both championships, but they simply MUST stop making errors of judgement and deliver clean weekends.

Hamilton/Merc have squandered 58 points to Verstappen/Red Bull according to my rough reconstitution of history.

Monaco 5pts dropped, should have finished 4th, team made a terrible strategy call
Azebaijan 18pts dropped, should have finished 2nd, brake magic
France 14pt swing. Had fastest car but stupidly underestimated the power of the undercut and forced onto suboptimal strategy
Austria 6pts dropped by damaging car over kerb and finishing 4th instead of a comfortable 2nd
Hungary 7pts dropped, should have been a comfortable win
Italy 6 points dropped, should have been 2nd, but slow pit stop dropped him behind Lando and allowed Verstappen to take them both out
Turkey, 2 points dropped, completed botched the 2nd half of the race, could have had an easy 4th or better

That's not including Hamilton's extreme luck in Imola or the contentious Silverstone move which worked out perfectly for him, but if either or both those had gone bad it could have been even worse.

It's time to cut out the errors and deliver the maximum results.

Verstappen refusing to take part in season 4 of Drive to Survive.

Could be awkward if he wins the title and has no input into F1s key series in the US

I really like Drive To Survive but i agree with Max on this one. I can't stand when they input engineer radio comms into scenarios that came from completely different races to try to create drama.
If they stick to telling the actual story then Max would have stayed. I expect others to follow suit too. Hopefully I'm wrong & it's just a one off season & Netflix learn to tell the real story from next season onwards.

Verstappen fans on suicide watch watching FP1

Interesting that it doesn't seem to be related to the PU and the time is supposedly gained on corner exit due to stalling the aero

Of course, a similar reconstitution of history from the Verstappen perspective:

Bahrain - 14pt swing. Max really should have cleanly passed Hamilton and taken a hard fought win
Italy -Finishes a clean P2 and picks up 18 pts if Red Bull don't bungle the stop. Gains 3 pts on Hamilton's likely 3rd place.

Total dropped points to Hamilton: harder to quantify, but maybe only 17pts without factoring how British GP would have played out. You could make an argument that Bahrain is really the only mistake that Verstappen himself has made all season that materially cost him.

He was unlucky in Azebaijan, Britain (sort of) and Hungary, and without those incidents would probably be out of sight in the championship. However you could also argue that he got lucky in Monaco, Belgium, Italy, & Russia all to some degree.

Don't blame him. I'm not a big fan of DTS.. it's so utterly fake.
