There's a big school of thought Newton was better....just didn't get the big enchilada WC winner medal. In my time of watching, Baines is definitely the best.

For anyone who saw these two play, there's no argument. Ray Wilson was the best in the world at his position in 1966. Newton was good but Ramon was our best ever in that position.

Thems me thoughts....

Didn't smile much, of course.

ha ha , alex lynsey the turkey neck was supposed to get an england cap because pejic didnt crack a smile, , but i loved him as a player hard as nails and could play what a player.off track my mate and fellow skin jaycee , shaved (YES bald)his cross lab ,english bull terrier and sprayed painted it with sham 69 ,efc that was called pejic in his honour , but to be honest even that ugly mutt was better looking than him

Best left foot, Hinchcliffe.
Best technically, Baines.
Best overall, van den Hauwe.

In the modern-ish era, ofc.

Whoah check out this Hinchcliffe and Beardsley Special from 91/92. Check out Stamford bridge - sort it out Roman.

That's a truly wonderful video. The car's in the corner! Ha

Baines is fast becoming my favourite ever

Only old enough to see Hinchcliffe and Baines in real time, so I couldn't say on the other two.

Hinchcliffe had the best dead ball delivery i've ever seen though, Dunc sure liked playing with him.

Imagine a Baines corner right on Big Duncs noggin, Kop End.
Phwoar.

It was a tough choice between him and Terry Phelan.

Whilst the football has changed so much over the last 40 years, if I was forced to choose one player who affected the games they played in the most, It has to be Ray Wilson. Even though he was 31 when he joined us, we still got 5 good years out of him, and the extra experience was a bonus. Like Baines, he was very good at getting involved in attacks, he defined the over-lapping full-back, but where he wins over Leighton is as a defender. Peerless timing, never going to ground unless strictly necessary and I don't think I ever saw him miss a tackle, he read the game beautifully and had that extraordinary quality of looking like he had more time on the ball than anyone around him. He was universally accepted as the best left back in the world at the time and, with Tommy Wright, John Hurst, and Labby, made up the best back 4 in the country. They could all play. The only unfortunate thing about Ray Wilson, was that he was developed into a pro from non-league football by Shankly, who managed Huddersfield at the time.

Baines is still 2nd in my book. It's rare to find a left back that has such a big effect on a match, and whilst Ray's left peg was sublime, I don't think it was technically as good as Leighton's. He seems to get better with every game so who knows? Maybe in time he will be looking to take over top spot

Had to vote hinchcliffe becuase bainsey is still playing, cant judge him untill he finishes. Fond memories of hinchy with them corners.

Looks like bainsey will defo pass him soon though.
